Knight In Shining Armor

Knight In Shining Armor

A Poem by Dominique Lambright
"

Not what you think

"

As little girls we play dolls and dress up

We act as if we are proper and can actually manage to stand up

In those heels of course, owned by our mothers

Thinking we can be our mothers

Little tea parties and daydreaming of unicorns

Little did we know we were the cliché of uni-corns

As we begin to age

There seemed to come about a new age

Our dolls turn to cell phones and our dress up became reality

Our mothers wishing they could control our reality

Trying to protect us from the upcoming mess of boys

Yes, those boys

The ones with the light skin

Or the ones with the darker skin

Either way they were of the opposite sex

And neither parent wanted us thinking about sex

Conveniently they were heart breakers

And in time we only wanted to become the jaw breakers

Now that we have come to an age of enlightenment

We know that men need our enlightenment

Yes we yearn for that sweeping off our feet moment

But acknowledge that sometimes they’re not capable of that moment

An insulting realization; though I didn’t mean it like that

But a magnifying one at that

So we as women stop looking for it

And you may be thinking, aren’t we too old to dream it

No, there’s always that urge

That death defying urge

For that man to come along and surprise us

Make us think about another person besides us

Because if not, we lose that womanly charm

That nurture that is your lucky charm

The fire that shows you we care

Fading to noticeably show we don’t care

To the point where right in front of us is the knight in shining armor

But we can’t tell because he will be breaking down our armor

This is very well written, with an interesting theme that is developed into advocacy for a perfectly valid point of view.
It must be me, I am certain that it is me, but why is it that the description of the men in the tale is two dimensional, shallow, and leaves me feeling like I need a sign hung 'round my neck, reading, "Objectified."
Don't pay it any mind, I'm sure it is mostly all of what I brought to the reading, and very little of your literary alms to the writing.
A very skilled and interesting write. Bravo.

Thanks again :)
i must confess that i was curious as to what your idea of the "knight in shining armor" is. however, i did get quite an education from this delightful piece. chivalry is not dead, my dear, it's just not widely taught anymore ...and women's lib (although i am all in favor) has removed much of that equation from modern society...i am all for going "dutch" on a night on the town, but i still insist on walking next to the curb to protect my lady from passing vehicles, opening doors for her and pulling her chair out to accommodate her ease in seating at a restaurant or social event...and...protecting her honor at every opportunity. today, though, i guess a knight would wear shining denim or seersucker or whatever else his fashion is made of...excellent write!
