Color myself pretty

Color myself pretty

A Poem by Annabelle Lee

Wake up to put on my face
Color myself pretty, color myself fake
But when it comes to the end of the day
And all the beauty's been rubbed away
You just see me, alone, afraid
I keep on hoping, continue to pray
That I can be myself someday
So this morning after I put on my face
I took one look and walked away
Only to come back and gaze
And remember younger, happier days
I took one look at all the fake
Then I washed it all away
To go and take on a whole 'nother day
A day where I choose not to live this way
I was more confident
I was more brave

Then I wake up to put on my face
Color myself pretty, color myself fake...
..
.

I get that you are such a deep thinker Annabelle but I think you are too hard on yourself. I hope one day you will see your own inner beauty because to want to share with other people (via poetry) is in my mind a beautiful trait - one of many such as kindness, empathy, charity and more).
The poem has a good flow to it - I didn't stumble and the 'Groundhog Day' nature of the daily life struggle has been very clearly conveyed.
Well done you.

I so know the feeling. its hard to hide when you don't have "makeup" but if you're talking in the literal sense I don't exactly know because I don't wear makeup but this is amazing anyways

Haha, thanks!
As kids we tend to be free to be ourselves, but as we grow older we wear metaphorical masks as we begin to see how cruel people can be to things they do not understand.

This is absolutely beautiful. I find this to be so true at times in my own life, this is a very personal poem that everyone can relate to! Very well done, one of my favorite poems I have read to date!

Thank you!
This was really good. It's hard to go against the expectations of our peers and society. It makes us not appreciate ourselves without adornments.
