By a Man

A Poem by Annabelle Lee

Little puppies new to the game
The den and the pack just aren't the same
Sticking together like we have since middle school
Trying to be mature, trying to be cool

Stick behind our Alphas, Betas, and Omegas
We always said this step wouldn't change us
But we're not just all dogs, different species, to say the least
We've got foxes, and wolves, and domesticated breeds

Now we're here and don't know what to do
Mom and Dad, should have listened to you
Working harder and harder just to find ourselves
Never willing to admit we need their help

Preening and cleaning and shedding and breaking
Lots of pretenders, you know everyone's faking
Not that that's what they meant for to happen
But that's what you get when the humans start trapping

Running through snow to save my skin
Wishing and hoping that the hunt will end
They're out for my fur, my meat, and my pride
But they can't tell I'm already dead inside

As soon as my life became no more than a prize
I had decided It was worthless in my own eyes
As soon as it was something to be taken away
It was no longer worth trying to save

And now they want to take my pride and beat me
I've never been so keen on leaving
Big school big step, I didn't want to take it
An now I need to leave if I'm ever going to make it

Get me out of here as fast as you can
Before my life's been taken by a man

the human race is a big furry ball of seething and roiling horse manure, yet we are so capable of beauty and light. i shudder to think of what an alien, superior race would do with us upon examination of our pathetic nuances...well written and thought provoking.

I love the 6th stanza. Basically, the piece reminded me of what it was like to transition from middle school to high school. I liked it.

Nice...my pleasure, as always.
From cradle to now you've been part of a litter ... you've been well trained.... you've learnt to roll over and have your tummy stroked, not to sleep on the couch and not to piss on the flowers, ... Now you want the peace to sniff all the smells and chew on a bone.

Haha and just get old and lazy
I got high school clicks, being picked on by others and wanting yet being afraid to leave home. I related to this well. I got out of a miserable little southern town at 18 so I feel you dog
