Pursuits are not desserts

Pursuits are not desserts

A Poem by Annabelle Lee

I as a girl have the right to be emotional
I as a teen have the right to be rebellious
I as a victim have the right to be angry.

But I'm not emotional
I'm not rebellious
I'm not angry

I as an American have the right to free speech
I as an American have the right to bear arms
I as an American have the right to life
                                                liberty
                                                and the pursuit of happiness
The pursuit of happiness
What the hell is that supposed to mean?
We have the right to spend the rest of our lives
Looking
Looking
Looking
and looking some more
For happiness
But we were never told we had the right to find it
And some of us are never given an opportunity.

As an American, I write, I speak, I will shout at every opportunity to tell my story
To have my voice heard
As an American I have the right to bear arms, meaning I have the right to protect myself
I have the right to stand up for myself and others around me
The right to life
The right to liberty
The right to be emotional, to be rebellious, to be angry

The rights we are entitled to do not have to be a code by which we live
We as human beings also have the right to choose
To choose which rights refer to us
To choose the code by which we live
To choose the people w are to live up to

No book is going to tell you how to be happy
No magazine is going to tell you how to be successful
No person will ever tell you who to be
                                                      Unless you let them

pursuits are not desserts...how's that for a title? i don't know what started this thought process in your mind but i really, really love this. it screams at the reader to wake up and smell the world and be realistic about rights and desire and end means. awesome! faves...

My pleasure!
You are right. Ultimately you will only find happiness within yourself. I liked the format that you used. This is a very good coming of age poem.
