Ships AwayA Story by DoeDevilDexterCaptain!Kirk and Cadet!Spock. It's an unfinoshed oneshot for the alternate reboot series.Amanda took Spock’s face in her hands, a gentle smile spreading across her face. “There’s no need to be anxious. You’ll do fine.” Spock took a single step back and looked at his mother, his head tilting as it shook a little, as if dismissing her. “I am hardly anxious, mother.” He said “And ‘fine’ has variable definitions. ‘Fine’ is unacceptable.” Amanda brushed her hand across the side of Spock’s shirt, as if brushing the lint from it or flattening out a crinkle. “Okay.”
5. a m, Spock’s alarm beeped loud and clear in his sensitive Vulcan ears. He opened his eyes, sliding his long fingers along it to turn it off. After replicating a simple breakfast, Spock looked at his PADD, then tilted his head to the blue science uniform on the coat hanger in his wardrobe. Three years, Spock had done nothing but studied for this opportunity. Today, hopefully Spock was to be assigned to a starship. To work in space. He wouldn’t have admitted it, but Spock felt a twinge of excitement deep in his chest as he rubbed the shirt’s material between his fingers. Spock drew his eyes away from the uniform and his thoughts, going over to the bathroom for a shower. Being a Vulcan (or at least half) as he was, Spock had kindly and rather shyly asked he have a manual shower, as the sonic showers, while quick and useful, were too intense for his sensitive Vulcan ears. Adjusting the shower just right, Spock stripped and stepped in, only showering for ten-point-o-three minutes as he calculated before moving back into his room and proceeding to put his science uniform on. The black undershirt was soft cotton, almost as soft a silk. And although the outer shirt could not be directly felt, it made Spock just a little warmer, and it reminded him of home. Spock let himself stand for a moment, admiring the warmth, letting memories flood in. And then it occurred to him. The time. Spock opened his eyes and checked the clock " then minutes until the shuttle launch. Spock faltered. Never had he been late before. He grabbed his bag of things, putting on his shoes and dashing out the door, trying as he could to politely push past people and make his way to the shipyard.
James Kirk sat impatiently at the front of the shuttle, his knee bouncing up and down as his patience wore thin. Eventually, he went up to the lieutenant, his tone suggesting he was not happy. “Captain?” the lieutenant said as he approached. “Lieutenant, could you please tell me why we are not moving yet?” Kirk asked, a frown etched into his face. “Uh,” he said. “We’re still waiting on out junior science officer, S’Chn T’Gai Spock.” It was surprising that he said that with such ease, yet Kirk simply glanced at the PADD and frowned further, if that were possible. And as he read that name, a slightly (and I mean ever so slightly) younger Vulcan in a blue science uniform rushed in, panting lightly, his black hair a little ruffled. “Spock, I assume?” Jim said rather unhappily, watching as the lieutenant checked him off the roll. “Affirmative.” He said blankly, his breath now caught. “I apologise for being so late.” “Alright, alright, just get on the shuttle so we can get going.” Kirk said, slightly admiring the Vulcan’s perky little a*s as he rushed inside the shuttle and sat down, Kirk moving to do the same, sitting down next to Leonard McCoy, the senior medical officer wo also happened to be Kirk’s “best friend”. (Or as Leonard would say, “Stop following me you little brat.”) “Who was that pointy-eared b*****d?” He asked as Jim sat down. “Don’t worry Bones, he’s just some junior science officer, he’ll be nowhere near you.” Kirk joked as he jabbed Bones playfully in the side with his elbow, how just groaned and mumbled ‘my a*s’.
Spock, as it happened, was assigned to the bridge. When Kirk had asked why ensign Koror wasn’t there, Spock aptly replied with “He has lung worm sir.” And they were on with it. Spock stayed mostly out of everyone’s way, he was surprisingly polite for a Vulcan. He stayed under the radar, well, under everyone’s radar, except for Jim, and, as it happened one other person’s. From what Kirk had seen, Spock had met a woman, one who worked on the bridge, in the station next to him. Her name was Uhura. Given Lieutenant Uhura was nice, and very attractive, Jim couldn’t help but feeling a small twinge of jealousy at seeing them break a kiss as the turbolift stalled to a halt. But then again, why should he? Jim had spoken to Spock to only a few times, and that was for orders and such, but even then. Sure, Jim’d been with a few other species in his time, a few that he really liked. But every time he walked, or every time his head moved, Jim couldn’t help but look at his perky a*s, or lock his eyes onto his pointy Vulcan ears. Jim, to be honest, had never had a thing for ears. Sure, one he’d dated that guy (or was it a girl? Hard to tell with some species...) that had had ears like Shrek, but that had done so much as even turn him off, so to speak. But maybe it was time Jim actually tried to get to know this kid. Shore leave was the perfect opportunity to get to know him, talk to him. Jim approached Spock as he sat down, sitting down next to him. Spock looked around, there were plenty of vacant seats, what was the Captain doing?
