Sister

Sister

A Poem by Destiny
"

Dedicated to my sister Danielle

"

Your hand over mine, shaping letters with pencil
is reflected in my handwriting now

My eyes looked up to you
until my height surpassed yours

But my heart, for my whole life, will look up to you,
no matter my size

People talk about their sister's shadow,
but I've only ever seen it as relief from the heat

The walls you built to shelter your family
taught me how to build Lark's

You're a refuge in all that you do
and I am the same, using your blueprints

Of all the entryways we've crossed into each other's homes,
my favorite is your arms

Across the US, in Okmulgee lake,
in mountain snow, in raindrops dripping from the pines

I've always found home in you
It is and forever will be, the coziest place for me
