The Bully -- Now I Know

The Bully -- Now I Know

The reason behind the Bully

The Bully

It was my first day at this new school

New to me but not to YOU.

You saw me, and I saw HATE,

It was right there in your eyes.

Having done nothing to you, but I wondered why?

Was it because I was scrawny and thin?

Or did my RED hair bother you?

You pushed me around during recess

Calling me ‘skinny Carrot-top,’

Having done nothing to you, so I wondered why?.

You knocked my books from off the desk

And wadded up my homework.

You tripped me up while walking the halls,

Having done nothing to you, but why?

Why do you pursue me all day long,

Why do you hate me so?

OKAY, THAT’S IT!  So  I followed you home

Ready to tell you off.

Then I saw you through the window

And your father next to you.

He was yelling and pulling at your arm

While putting down his bottle of Vodka.

He smacked you on the back of the head

He called you names and made you cry.

I looked at your father, AND THEN I KNEW,

He was tall, skinny, and a CARROT-TOP, too!

Now today you were there at school

With some red marks across your face.

I slowly walked up to and stood in front.

You frowned assuming a confrontation.

But I stood there with brand new confidence wearing just a smile.

“You know I’m NOT your father, right? -- I could be just your friend though.

But only if you want to, if you want to be mine, too.”

I handed him half my Candy Bar and slowly walked away.

I left him standing with eyes like saucers.

I turned to look into his stare.

And I saw that IT was now all missing,

All the hate was gone!

All I did was reach out to him,

Yes, now that I KNEW WHY.

So now it seems I have a shadow,

Like a Protector and a super friend!

All I did was just reach out…

Now that I KNEW Why!

Lovely write. This poem was very moving and once you told the reason behind the bully, it all made perfect sense. I can relate to your words. I was bullied once in school and there was one girl named Ruby who did and I found out later that she was in an abusive home. I became friends with her because i was in the same situation for years. But of course, the friendship didn't last, but just me being there for her and telling her she was not alone changed her perspective on things and i saw hope in her eyes. Smiles, thank you for sharing your heart with us. i look forward to reading more of your work (:
