Re-posted here. An exercise in reflected rhyme. Originally written for a young lady who had quite captured my heart. I thought I would put it here to share.

I Saw You Last Night, As You Slept
By Dave Rogers, 22 Jun 88

While I slept, I saw you last night.
I traveled many leagues to see your smile.
My heart soared, my spirit flew, no avail.
Alas, when I arrived you were fast asleep.
My heart mourned, I grew weary from flight.
Feeling quite low, I set to leave you.
I was stopped, the light upon your face.
As I halted to glance, you smiled softly.
My heart leapt, my quest answered sweetly.
And, I began to see anew, my dearest,
The softness of your face, curve of lip,
The flutter of your dreaming eyes, your hair,
The slow rise and fall of your breathing.

Holding your pillow close as a live thing,
I beheld you so, wishing I was there.
Oh to hold you and not, stinging whip.
I envied the pillow, wishing to be nearest.
Gently, I lay down beside you, so discreetly.
I lay beside you as I dreamed oftly.
Seeing you so near, desiring greatly to embrace.
Wanting to kiss, not able, this I knew.
Oh, what a fell creature the morning light.
It caused you to stir, I shudder deep.
Afore you wake, my ship must quickly sail.
My night’s quest fulfilled, longing all the while.
While you slept, I saw you last night.

This a really beautiful, sensuous poem

"I envied the pillow, wishing to be nearest.
Gently, I lay down beside you, so discreetly."

This line really seemed to capture the essence of the poem completely for me. What a wonderful sense of romantic longing throughout.

Great job.

Great job on this. Beautiful imagery and perfect details to make the read actually see and feel your words. I love it when a writer can make me see of feel something as if it was really happening to me.

Great Job!!!
