Silent Words Spoken

Silent Words Spoken

A Poem by Dave "Doc" Rogers
"

Hmmm...

"

Silence…

More questions asked.

Silence…

Same questions asked.

Silence…

The gnawing emptiness
The persistent question mark
The void filling answer
Always just out of reach

Start of day
Noon time break
Thoughts during rush hour drive
Thoughts as I lie awake at night
Persistent dreams, same themes

What is this thing that pains me so?
This thing that is always out of reach?
Questions without answers
Answers self-produced no answer at all

I stare at the ceiling as if it can hear
Questions without answers
No solutions I devise sate
Distractions distract but do not resolve

Hating the quiet time, I fill my time
Events and books, cinema and songs
Loud music and drink, sweat from a beat
Eyes with the same questions staring at me

Is this all there is, is there more
Are you the answer to this emptiness within
Are you the thing that fills the void
Are you the one that completes me

Silence…

More questions than answers
Hollowness filled with more emptiness
It has no name I can recall
It is a thing that gnaws but is not fed

Silence…

“Call to me and I will come to you…”
The preacher said before I changed the channel
“Call to me” I queried “I will come”
Who is this that comes and why

New questions asked about old

Silent no more…

Answers not verbal
Words spoken through signs
“Come to me,” I called
This one they famed

Quiet questions answered
No voice heard me speak
But every one answered
Quiet questions again given

Silence… and peace

It having been answered
In a silent, whispered prayer
Make it real, come live with me

Silence… and peace

New questions asked
New questions answered
New trials of life
Hollow void filled

Peace in a storm
No chasing after things
Silent words spoken
Answering all things

C’est fini

Thoughts in the form of questions can be so tormenting, can't they? Persistent dreams, same themes...Interesting. I just bought a book entitled "Understanding the Dreams You Dream," by Ira Milligan. They say persistent dreams with repetitious themes should not be ignored. God spoke to his people more in dreams than any other way, according to this author. I do remember quite a few accounts. One example of a repetitious dream was Josephs in Genesis 41:25, 32. I had always felt God speaks to us in our dreams through my own personal experience, and though I am careful not to follow them exclusively, I am learning to discern when God is attempting to show us something in particular.

I liked the piece even though it's title is more of an oxymoron. Silent Words Spoken... what a concept. INTERESTING!

How wonderful that the silence was answered in the end with peace and a fulfilling prophecy. Intriquing write - I could see this performed before an audience - it reads as a spoken word piece - the longing is sincere and honest. Thank you.

when I read, I seek a connection with the writer...I read this several times over and the connection deepened more each time...I LOVE IT! there is a quote by Mother Teresa, " We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature - trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence... We need silence to be able to touch souls."...for me your poem embodies this quote...THANK YOU :o)

Wouldn't it be nice, if silence was peace, if silence was golden. I liked the poem. I decided to read some of your writing after reading the excellent reviews you have given others. Again, I enjoyed the poem and wish everyone would see silence as peace.

You really made us feel the anticipation and nagging thoughts through the structure and repetitions. It read like the thought process of an anxious troubled mind because of the repetitions and unaswerable questions you have peppered throughout. I have to give you a lot of credit because this does not come off as heavy handed in any way. You skillfully repeat just enough to drive your point home.
