Operation Inkling Chapter TwoA Story by strghtjcket
I would be leaving in 2 weeks and it felt like an eternity. I loved my parents with all my heart, but I feel what I'm doing will bring me up better and I will fight for what I believe in. School today is as normal as every other day, except that I get yelled at from my friends.
"Becky! What the heck were you thinking?!" My friend October and I are sitting on our bench that we eat at for lunch. She has been yelling the same thing for a few minutes. Maybe I should respond.
"October, I was completely sane when I made the decision. It's something I have to do." As I spoke it was strong but started to fade as I continued, "For Caleb."
She sighed and I began to pick at my disgustingly greasy school pizza.
"Look," she started carefully, "I understand that you aren't quite over his disappearance, but joining the Army?" She shook her head. I scowled.
"I don't want you to get killed out there Becky. You know I love you, but it scares me how much you've changed since then. You aren't the fun-loving-hyper girl anymore," she said sincerely. Her saddened expression was too much for me to look at so I gazed at the wall.
"October! Becky!" a voice screamed girlishly, rattling the Ramada roof and scaring some other eating students. October's eye lit up with joy at the sound and I shook my head. I felt someone sit next to me, and I turned to see Trent, my other best friend. Trent was about 6'2" with light green eyes and had the messiest light brown hair in the whole school. He was a soccer player, something that I have no knowledge of how to play. October was almost his opposite in looks with long naturally straight black hair and dark brown eyes. She was never one for sports but has high metabolism to keep her petite figure. One thing I loved the most about Trent, was his great sense of humor. October was the kind of girl that wouldn't last long in a physical fight, but her words could take down anyone. I was truly blessed to have these two at my side for all these years. It just made it harder to leave.
"Please tell me you came here to help me knock some sense into this girl," October asked Trent, aggravation still evident on her voice. He gave me a sideways hug and kissed me on the side of my head.
"Sorry I can't help you there. You should know by now that whenever she makes a big decision that she sticks with it. Hmmm....like when she decided to become the best pokemon trainer." I blushed in embarrassment at that old memory.
"I was 6 years old. Pokemon was big back then," I said in defense. October laughed and took another bite of her equally disgusting lunch.
"I'm going to support you with whatever you do Becky" Trent stated, leaning his head on mine. October did the same on my right and sighed in agreement.
My eyes began to water carelessly and I used one of my hands to wipe off the stray tears.
"Oh don't cry honey," October whispered, petting my hair.
"I know you lost your dream of being a pokemon trainer, but I think it's time to go a different direction." I laughed at Trent's joke and pushed him lightly on the shoulder.
"I love you guys." My sincerity was clear in my voice and my heart swelled with deep emotion as I looked at my two smiling best friends.
"You better call me every chance you get or I will hunt you down." I rolled my eyes at October and felt my heart soar at her words. They were my saviors and I wouldn't doubt that they would die for me, as I would for them.
"Come on, let's get out of here. I think we need to spend together in a more positive way." Trent took our lunches and threw them in the nearby trash can. October then linked her arm with my right and Trent linked his with my left.
"What about classes?" I asked indefinitely. They just laughed and shook their heads.
"Classes, smanches. Who cares?" October giggled. God how I love them.
