Other-worldly signs

They see their loved ones

Send signs from beyond the grave:

Pennies from heaven

A butterfly’s gentle landing on their bedside lamp

That precious cardinal or hummingbird

     out of place or season

The kind greeting from a mysterious stranger

Or a daffodil blooming in August

I am not as fanciful

Or as perceptive

But I see my own sign

Invading my hermetically sealed abode

Having transmogrified my remaining life

Into my own next self

Desperately seeking to touch my present

And still seeking to escape when trapped.

It’s me again, as a common fly

Refusing to leave my side

But always just out of reach

A modest amusement for my furry friend

As it flies by

Still out of reach - a tease.

I was already marked by others

As a gadfly

(Had to look that one up from the 80s!)

As in the ointment for refusing to go along

And get along

And here we are in our transition

Our final coup de grace

Obviously, I was late

     getting late - crossing over

So they have sent an emissary to greet me

We shall cross over in unison;

But one of us will return.

You will feel my sign in abundance

at your next picnic

In your backyard - in your face.

And no, I don’t like getting wet

But I’ll wait patiently by your brook

For you to emerge

For me to perch.

I am the sign;)

All reinforcements are welcome. Just be gentle as the fly’s life is a matter of weeks;)
