![]() Playing with PreyA Poem by Dina
The night is still as I’m circled by the horn beast
He looks for weakness, mistaken for cheap thrill I lay the frills of my dress down Careful not to make eye contact This is not a time for being too honest. He inches closer, I’m tempted to look over my shoulder But flight kicks in instead So I put my hands above my head, and twirl like a ballerina Because unpredictability is your best friend When dealing with the the red man Or so I thought But my strategy, he caught And when I twirled, he twirled too Though when I curtsied, he said “adieu” So I let down my arms and took a deep breath, before panting and placing my hands on my chest But when least expected, he made his advance With my guard down, he finally found a new chance And the horned beast grabbed a hold of me. And covered my eyes, so that I could not see. And I kicked and I screamed ‘til I heard a voice “Why don’t you come with me to a place up north.” So I broke from the beast and ran right towards the stranger Which to my surprise, put me in imminent We did go north, as guaranteed But as we continued to travel, the stranger began to bleed And he shed his skin as his voice grew more narrow Now the charming man most resembled a scare crow And he spoke in the same tense the horned beast did “Now remind me again, where we were kid?” And he grinned as I clawed my way through the carriage Running off towards the Forrest forgetting my baggage Did I lose them? I think some time has passed by The colors have changed within the night sky So I tip toe to the outskirts looking for a cue I don’t think the beast is close right now, do you? © 2023 DinaReviews
