Heartbreak

Heartbreak

A Poem by Dillon Walker

I always thought that heartbreak happened at the end of love

but it turns out

it’s the opposite

Heartbreak occurs the minute you fall in love

That’s what let’s you fall in love

When your heart splits in two

or shatters

into a million pieces

That’s when you fall in love

When love ends,

your heart shuts down

maybe it can’t create anymore love

or maybe it’s forced to stop

so it closes itself off

It tries to protect itself

tries to stop itself from loving anyone

It’s trying to protect you,

but it doesn’t know how

It doesn’t understand

that misery won’t protect you

It only understands two things

how to love

and how to stop you from loving

After all

it is just a heart

That’s all it was designed to do

Your heart doesn’t learn

Your heart doesn’t change

Your heart wants to live simply

Your heart wants simply to be alive
