Night Keeper

Night Keeper

A Poem by D. Nelson
"

you tell me...

"

On a dark empty night,

we sit two on that gravel roof top,

my arm cradles the small of her back,

sit stare wide eyed to the hollow calm sky,

dominated seamlessly by the watcher of the night.

My friend and my foe,

elegantly perverted so,

he watches my every move cautiously,

never stepping past his boundary,

never casually crosses me,

observing my nights movement,

and inessential improvements,

incriminating moments,

witnessing my atonements,

he is the keeper of my sins,

me very next of kin,

and the presence that everlastingly maintains me.

Her and I close the windows and the doors to the room,

but the acts within are still attested by the moon,

his kingdom unwavering in the hour of the darkest noon,

reigning legion over the night sky,

all light from around him is completely consumed.

The time for his end is approaching.

over the edge of existence his wretched sister is encroaching,

so he must disappear yet again to return.

Bringing back his carful watch...

until his drifting fate has been learned.
