Shoe

Written in 2010

They sit on the front porch
A father and his daughter.
He teaches her to tie her shoe.
Loop. Under. Pull.
"It's simple."
He says with a grin.
She ties her shoe with ease.
They both smile, and giggle.
Their eyes meet.
Both blue as the sea.
He runs his thumb on her cheek and says,
"I'll never leave you."
She blushes as he kisses her forehead.

Seven years later,
She sits on her porch & ties her shoe.
The day of her father's funeral.
Loop. Under. Pull.
As she pulls the lace,
She says to herself,
"It's simple... I'll never leave you."

This is a beautiful poem, Emma and a great tribute to the Father/Daughter relationship. It's the simplest of memories that return to us, something as simple as tying your shoe laces, but the words spoken live forever in our minds. Great job with this.
