Ode to a dying tree

Ode to a dying tree

A Poem by Dianne S Penfold
"

Some trees have been around for many lifetimes. I wonder what they have seen, what they have been through as the seasons and years pass. So many secrets etched into their rings. What a mystery!

"

As the darkened twilight creeps in

And the warmth of the radiant orange sky fades

You stand alone in the growing shadows,

Your thin long branches creaking in the cold damp wind.

Groaning in a deep, low voice, as the evening light dances upon your deep scars.

You have seen the passing of many gray moons,

Oh courageous tree, you have braved many wicked storms,

Insulted the raging wind and stood your ground, refusing to bow,

Even when the devious rain pelted down upon your lush green head,

You did not surrender your pride.

Oh stubborn tree, you made the peaceful sky grow dark with wrath.

You stood perfectly still as the furious thunder screamed in violent rage at you,

But you were not afraid. You did not bow!

You did not move when the demonic lightening stared you in the face,

It’s livid yellow eyes glowing with evil .

You did not run when you felt the painful lash of it’s barbed whip upon your stiff back.

You did not break!

Oh mysterious tree, you have hidden many secrets deep within your broken roots.

Secrets that I will never discover.

As the last beam of the light of day is devoured by the dreary darkness,

Your vibrant memories slowly disappear…

Oh dying tree, you shall not experience the dawn of tomorrow!

At our woodlands we have one giant maple tree. Must be at least 300 years old. This tree always give me peace and healthy energy. Same like same people or poems .

This poem remains one old Chinese poem about a moon. Where poet describe moon like peaceful force without judging . I like your poem cause I like dying trees. You carved with true passion and empathy. When you wish to tree do don't experience what will follow. True poets don't just write about them self but also about another creatures and elements. I enjoyed your writing cause it was quiet refreshing to read something more then just self reflections. Thank you for that.
