“Ma, warm the beans,” hearing a knock on the log cabin door
Standing there, a young man, looking older than his years Wearing a tattered Rebel uniform; hat in hand “Any food to spare, sir? ...the road is long.” "Come in,” indicating a spot at an old wooden table Woman smiles and sets down a steaming cup of beans Followed by a small square of corn bread, hot from the oven A few dots of home-made butter melting on top "Are you on your journey home?" Mouth full of beans, he mumbles, "Thank you, ma'am, It has been a long spell since I seen the I seen the ol' place My Ma and Pa still there, the last I heard. Sister, too Probably, has younguns of her own" “Pa, pour him a cup of water.
