Sirens' Songs

Sirens' Songs

A Poem by Diane Lockard
"

Researching mermaids in Norway and found sirens in Sicily...

"

Lovely Sicilian beach, mythical creatures sit

Their songs enchant and charm, anyone who heard them

Sailors fall under their spell to the cold, wet depths

Beautiful, only in the imagination, dark underneath

Argonauts sail pass the Sirens, all in vain,

Orpheus singing, drowning out the sound

Distressed to see men hear their song and yet escape

Decreed their lives would end, their power gone

Threw themselves into the sea, and turned to stone

Your poetry took me in my teen, when I use to read stories about Sirens, Medusa and Mermaids. Love the way you expressed words in your poetry, it was like a movie playing in some corner of my mind. Thank you for such a beautiful writing, consider me one of your true fan. Respect

they don't call Sirens sirens for nothing...problem is, they're everywhere now, and even those that aren't worth their weight in life preservers learn the songs and paste the mask upon their face...i remember back in grade school they were teaching little boys how to untie ourselves from the mast...

These words conjure fanciful images and remind me of the many times I passed through the Straits of Messina while in the Navy. Make no mistake--I did look and listen for those sirens.

This is so fun to read. Who doesn't love a good myth. This really fills in the pieces and describes them in such a eerie light. I look forward to reading more from you. Kudos

There's a mythical feel to this I find irresistible...and it reads so beautifully, leaving me feeling the diaphanous breeze from the salty water.
