How to Carry Stew In a Styrofoam Carton..A Story by Diane LockardThis is an excerpt from an email, after a café put stew in a Styrofoam take-out carton. Carry, very carefully.
Thank you for taking me to the "home" Trax - it was only 2 stops to the car. Did you get your Easter stuff? Came home, and the kids had colored eggs...
I was thinking of a story. How do you carry home stew in a styrofoam "open and shut" container, not tightly closed. Plus, I was going on Trax - electric train for 50+ blocks. My friend offered to take me home to my car that I accepted.
Note: I didn't get it out of Cafe Main before spilling some of my delicious slow-cooked Beef Stew with the most decadent potatoes, carrots, onions, and tomatoes.
The owner was gracious
and put it in a plastic sack. OK, hold it horizontal, and balance in one hand, purse in the other, open door and proceed down stairs. Wait for light, and friend and I proceed across the street. So far so good, walk up a small grassy hill and down, balancing said package. Arrive at car and put it on the floor of the car. Whew!!
We venture down the road, checking out places to visit another time, pass a Army and Navy store, "Did you know you could buy London Bobbies' hats there?" I didn't.
Turn on 78th and go East to the Gardner Village station, walked up a short flight of stairs to the road, carefully holding the carton. There were several construction workers nearby, one stopped traffic, "What service," and I crossed the road to the Trax station. I proceeded to my car and carefully put the sack and carton on the car floor. Lo and behold, I made it home with stew intact. It was immediately eaten by a helpful family member!
This is another of my "Do not try at home" scenarios.
You need to try this hidden treasure on 2701 South and Main Street - decadent Mediterranean and Balkan cuisine. Open Monday to Saturday, and has two specials each day; Thursday's specials were delicious slow-cooked Beef Stew with tasty potatoes, carrots, onions, and tomatoes, and an ethic dish with cubed potatoes made to perfection, as everything else, hamburger, egg, and sour cream...
I want to try more of the specialty dishes, Greek salad, and baklava for dessert.
