Chapter Three:
Bite
Kyle

  It was one night (day) when everyone on campus was asleep. I heard the door creak open, at first I thought it was Dimitri but I remembered that he left to go see his family for the weekend.

I sat up and saw  a shadow of a girl approaching. Her hair was loose around her shoulders and a nightgown flowed behind her.

" Kyle?" Her soft voice says

" M-Maya?" I ask " What are you doing here?"

She sits on the end of my bed. " I couldn't sleep and I needed to talk to you."

I sit straighter. " What is it?" I really couldn't care less. I can't stand her.

" I just wanted to tell you I'm sorry about trying to interfere with you and Dimitri's relationship. And that the truth is, I just did that to get on your nerves... 'Cause I really like you both." She giggles at the last bit

Huh? Maya likes me? Yet she tried to steal Dimitri from me? I just sit there and don't say anything to her. We sit there for a few minutes before she talks again.

" I know you won't accept how I feel because you have Dimitri, but..." She crawls over to me, pushing me down on the bed. " This is the least I could do." Her raises her hand to her neck and cuts a clean cut across the side of her neck with her nail.

" I know that my blood is really sweet to you. I could tell by the way you reacted the day we met." She says

The blood on her neck streams down and a drop falls on my cheek. Just then my throat becomes a fiery blaze of fire. I haven't had blood in months, probably over a year. I reach up to her face, oh god. I have to stop... But I-I can't....

I cup my hand behind her head and pulls her down to me. I quickly lick the blood, it's so sweet. Her reaction is like mine with Dimitri. To me it just feels like sitting by a campfire. The burn in my throat ceases and I let her go.

Her eyes are dazed as she looks at me. What have I done now? I put my hand over my face regretting what I did. She continues to look at me.

" Look Maya.... Don't do that again. I don't like you. Things like that shouldn't be done on whim..."

Her eyes look hurt. " But... Kyle, I want you to want me too, what other way can I do that?"

I look away. " Just leave."

She stands up and steps backwards then turns and leaves quickly. Great, what now? I can't believe I let myself do that. For vampires and Dhampire's, taking blood from someone when you already inlove with someone else is like a human guy cheating on his lover. It's not good. And I know the first thing I have to do when I see Dimitri.

~~~~~~~~~~~
When Dimitri gets back on Monday I become really nervous. What will he say when I tell him about Maya? I pace in the dorm until he comes in.
" Hey Kyle."
I turn and see him. I let out a sigh. " Dimitri I have to tell you something about Maya..."
He walks over to me and takes me hands in his. " I already know what she did last night. She told me everything. Don't worry, i'm not upset." He says
Maya told him? " I-I'm sorry Dimitri... It happened on whim, honestly!" I stammer
He holds me close. " It's been over a year since you had blood, I understand. But next time you get like that, make sure it's with me and not someone else."
I nod and wrap my arms around him as he leans down and kisses me. I move my arms up around his neck and gently bite into him. The sweet blood flows into my mouth. Sensation floods both of us.
It's the first time I have had his blood in a long time. I missed the taste of it. Sweet, pleasuring, wonderful. When I finished I looked at Dimitri. He put his arms around me and hugged me tight.
~~~~~~~~~~~

At class the next day Maya sat exceptionally close to me. I tried to move away but she would always move even closer. Damn this girl was annoyingly pushy.

" Maya, personal space..." I tell her and she looks away and moves away

After morning classes Dimitri and I went out into the flower gardens. No one ever went there. They've been deserted for years but flowers continue to grow. We sat down under a cherry blossom tree and he put his arm around my waist and I leaned my head on his shoulder. We liked to be here when we wanted to be away from all the other students. And Maya.

At first we thought she would be a cool friend, but ever since she did THAT, we have both had a hard time being around her because she was being, well, pushy. We discussed our plans for the Christmas break. We were both going home in England. My family was going to throw a huge celebration with all our family and friends at our mansion for my birthday.

I looked up into the night sky. The moon was a crescent now. The Blood Moon was over for another year. Dimitri placed his hand under my chin and lifted my face to his, lowering his lips to kiss me. But before he could my cell phone rang.

Embarrassed, I quickly fumbled for the phone to see who was calling me. It was Maya.

" Hello Maya..." I say

" Kyle.... I'm sorry... F-For everything... I got to close to you and freaked you both out... Please, forgive me, I want us all to be friends again..." She said

I could tell she was crying. Her voice was wavering. I peered up at Dimitri, I knew he heard because he nodded. Meaning we should accept her apology so we could be friends again.

" Don't worry about it Maya, it's all fine. Everything will be back to normal tomorrow." I told her

" Oh thank goodness! That is such a relief." She sighed

Once I hung up Dimitri brought my lips to his and kissed me. I put my hand on the back of his head and kissed him back. The kiss seemed to last a long time.

" Only a few more days until Christmas vacation, then you birthday." He said

I smiled and nodded. Pulling him back and continued to kiss him. He moves me so my back is against the tree. My hands tousle his hair as we kiss and kiss under the crescent moon.

Hello again Avangeline.

Here's a little something that might help smooth out the story flow.
Y'know this particular paragraph?

---------------------

" I just wanted to tell you I'm sorry about trying to interfere with you and Dimitri's relationship. And that the truth is, I just did that to get on your nerves... 'Cause I really like you both." She giggles at the last bit

Huh? Maya likes me? Yet she tried to steal Dimitri from me? I just sit there and don't say anything to her. We sit there for a few minutes before she talks again.

---------------------

This might be a little more interesting.
---------------------
She looked down, studying her nails, "I just wanted to tell you I'm sorry about trying to interfere with you and Dimitri's relationship." She admitted, glancing up at me, "And that the truth is, I just did that to get on your nerves... 'Cause I really like you both." A smile lit up her face, a small giggle escaping her lips.
Huh? Maya likes me? Yet she tried to steal Dimitri from me?
Unable to reply, words drying up on my tongue, I just sit and stare. After a few heart beats, she spoke again.
-----------------------

I dunno, it's a great chapter as it is, a very surprising twist in the plot that really thickens the relationship the readers have with Maya. Just thought I could suggest a way to spice things up. I might add that the pacing is rushed, it would have been nice to see the scene where Dimitri leaves, so that the reader can feel Kyle's longing and sense of loss, if there was any when Dimitri left.

Also, if you strip this all down to only the dialogue, it seems a little unconventional in terms of the character's phrasing and speech patterns, if you don't mind me saying.
----------------------------
" Kyle?"

" M-Maya?" I ask " What are you doing here?"
(Something like this might have been more intriguing.
"M-Maya?" I stammer, surprise prickling in my chest. "What are you doing here?")

" I couldn't sleep and I needed to talk to you."

(Here's another suggestion.
"I couldn't sleep," She admitted, "And I needed to talk to you.")

"What is it?"
(Feeling dubious, I sit straighter. "What is it?" I mutter.

This is my last suggestion, I promise. I just wan to let ya know about all of the possibilities.)

(Skip skip skip)
"I know you won't accept how I feel because you have Dimitri, but..."
"This is the least I could do."

"I know that my blood is really sweet to you. I could tell by the way you reacted the day we met."
(If you don't mind,
"I know you must be dying to taste my blood." She murmured, "I could tell, when we first met, you knew I must be sweet.")

"Look Maya.... Don't do that again. I don't like you. Things like that shouldn't be done on whim..."
(This particular part in the dialogue is the reason I brought it up. Either he says "Maya, you must listen to me," instead of "Look Maya," or he doesn't say "whim" at the end.
These two different styles in the phrasing just throws me off.

"Look Maya," I tried my best to keep calm, briskly taking her by the shoulders and nudging her away, "Don't do that again." I tore my gaze away, "I don't like you, not like that."
I shook my head, "Things like this just can't be done when ever we want."
)

--------------------
That's all that stuck out. I'm glad they forgave her in the end of the chapter, that was nice. I'll be reading the next one right after this. Very great story so far. :)

Don't worry, these are all just suggestions. You don't need to take them if they hurt the way you envisioned your story.
Cheers! :D
