Chapter Six

“Why are you so quiet today, Natalie?”  Ramon asks me.

Ramon’s the therapist. He’s actually either related to Dr. Peters or they’re married. I know that because on his desk it says “Ramon Peters”. He even asked me if I’d call him Mr. Peters. Of course I told him I didn’t really care what he preferred, I wasn’t going to listen. I’m pretty sure if I asked him to call me miss"well, I don’t know my last name. But still, I know he probably doesn’t like to be told what to do so, he’d probably say no.

“What’s my last name?” I ask. I know he knows it. They know everything about me, I’m sure.

“You answer my question and then I’ll answer yours.” He nods.

Who does he think he his? Not only am I forced to sit in this ridiculously uncomfortable chair, now I’m basically forced to tell him why I’m being quiet in order to know my last name! Are you kidding me? First of all, the reason I’m quite is because I’m being held hostage. They refuse to let me go. Well, I never really asked to go. I just tried to go and they wouldn’t let me, which is pretty much the same thing.

“I don’t want to be here. That’s why I’m quiet.” I answer his question anyway. Honestly, I’m not up for a fight today. I just want to know my last name.

“Why is that?”

“I answered the question; now give me my last name.”

“Hold on"why don’t you want to be here?”

“No! You said if I answered the question, you’d tell me what my last name is.” I stand up and slam my hands down onto the desk he’s sitting behind. “Now, what’s my last name?” I’m shouting so loud, I’m almost certain another Unit can probably hear me.

“Daniels.”

“Natalie Daniels?” I sit back down. I’m feeling unsure about this last name. I mean, how do I know he isn’t just making one up to get me out of his face?

“Yes,” he nods. “I think we can continue this next week.” He stands up and walks out from behind his desk.

“Did I make you uncomfortable?” It’s just as easy to mock them as it probably is to mock me.

“Please tell me if you have any dreams, Natalie.” He says as he opens the door.

I start to walk out the door but stop and turn my head. “Oh no, please, call me Ms. Daniels.” I smile.

From the corner of my eye I can see there’s a person sitting in one of the chairs next to the door. I turn to see who it is. It’s Lucas. What’s he doing here? I honestly don’t see why he would think after what happened yesterday, it’s okay to show up randomly like this. From the look on his face I’m almost 100% sure he’s not here to see Ramon.

Lucas stands up and nods at me. He looks like he wants to say something, but then glances at Ramon. I can tell whatever he was about to say, it can’t be said in front of the staff.

Ramon walks us to the end of the hallway and unlocks the doors. When the doors close I turn to look at Lucas. I open my mouth to say something but he shakes his head and grabs my arm. He’s dragging me down hall after hall. I’m officially lost. I hope he plans on taking me back to my room.

He stops in front of double doors with words above it that reads: EXTRA CLOTHING. The doors are propped open just like the cafeteria. Lucas pulls me inside and smiles. There isn’t anyone else in here. Everywhere I turn is different pieces of white clothing. This room has everything thing, from dresses to jeans, shorts to skirts, sandals to socks, and even swimsuits to underwear.

“Have at it.” He says as he starts to walk to the men’s pant section. “It’s all free.”

“No it’s not.” I laugh.

“Actually, it is. It’s for all residents.” He winks. “Plus, I figured you didn’t like what was already placed in your drawers.”

“Thanks.” I say as I glance around to see what I want.

I decide on looking through the jeans. I think I need pants more than anything else. I’m tired of looking at these slacks. The jeans actually look nice or I guess normal. I don’t know what I would’ve worn before my memory loss, but I’m kind of falling for them. Maybe it’s because I’ve been in these slacks for several days, I don’t know.

Lucas has about three items in his hand. He keeps glancing up at me. I wonder what he is thinking. Somehow I feel like I already know, though. I think he’s thinking about finding a way to explain the reason for what happened yesterday. He wants to apologize, but he’s afraid I’ll be mad.

“It’s okay, you know. I forgive you.” I say.

“I"I didn’t mean to hurt you in any way.” He explains.

“I know.” I grin, still going through the racks of clothing.

“Do you want to know the truth?” He asks, walking towards me.

“Please.”

“I thought maybe you’d actually remember something. I didn’t, when I went through my examination. I think somehow we’re connected, like, our pasts are. So, I thought maybe if you remembered something, we could find a way out of here together.” He takes my hand.

I snatch my hand back. Not on purpose, it was more like instinct. “What makes you think our pasts are somehow connected?”

He shakes his head. “I’m not sure yet.”

I end up leaving with a pair of skinny jeans, a tank top, and a sports bra. I just needed something comfortable. Something I can survive in for a little while, while I continue to search for a way out of here. Deep down, I think Lucas wants to help me. Well, more like, he wants us to help each other. I don’t mind, though. As long as we make it out, I’ll be fine.

Right now, we just walked up to my door. Lucas is holding my things while I unlock my door. I open the door wide so he can sit my stuff down on my bed. I close the door and walk towards him.

“Thanks for showing me that room.” I smile.

“Anytime,” he smiles back. He chuckles. “I have a really weird question.”

“Ask.”

“So, you know how you were exiting Mr. Peter’s office?”

I call him Ramon. It was more of a rebellion like act but, yes I remember. Continue?”

“Why did you say ‘call me Ms. Daniels’?”

“Apparently, according to Ramon, it’s my last name.”

He laughs, “Well, if Daniels is your real last name. It compliments your first name.” He studies the look on my face. I guess he can tell I’m a little confused. “Yes, it’s a compliment.” He winks and starts heading towards the door.

We say our “goodnights” and then he leaves. Honestly, I think I feel calmer around him. It’s like I recognize his presence. I don’t know; maybe our pasts are somehow connected. It may turn out we used to be best friends or something. I mean, if that were the case, wouldn’t it be like history repeating itself? We kind of already are becoming friends. I wouldn’t say close friends, yet. I believe we’re heading towards that direction, though.

I place my clothes inside my drawer and then go to lie down. I turn to my side and there lies a note on my nightstand. I pick it up and read it.

You’re not wrong, but neither are you right.
