Why Didn't They?

Why Didn't They?

A Poem by Devin Gates
"

Will humans every succeed in NOT repeating the mistakes of the past?

"

WHY DIDN'T THEY?

When he wrote down his plan, why didn’t they say anything?

When he told them about their new enemy, why didn’t they do something?

Because, there was no telling the destruction it would bring.

When he spoke of hate and blasphemy,

Maybe they didn’t take him seriously.

When he spoke of ‘them and us'

Maybe they didn’t know who to trust.

When he opened up camps, why didn’t they say anything?

When he manufactured death, why didn’t they do something?

Because, they liked the sounds of the words he was speaking.

Why didn’t they do anything when they had the chance?

Maybe it wasn’t as easy to see at first glance.

But, what will you say after we missed our chance?

Just like a coordinated waltz, this too is a repeated dance.

When he speaks of hate and blasphemy,

Maybe we should take him seriously.

When he speaks of ‘them and us ‘

Maybe we know who not to trust.

Why didn’t they then?

Why don’t we now, and again?
