Contract # 305
Chance Montgomery Vs The Lost Ghost
"Are you serious we're going to get fifty large for this one?" Xavier
asks Chance as they drive through Downtown Chicago.
"Yeah but this s**t isn't like the others, this one's weird."
This one was freelance, he usually wouldn't do them but it was a
chance to get his friend and protégé some experience plus he liked
Chicago. They met with the client in the high rise corporate building
in his office. His name is Tim Gelsomino and they were instructed to
wear business suits to blend in. Chance could tell just by the way he
talked that he was a sneaky little s**t with too much money but what
the hell, a job is a job.
The meeting only took ten minutes with no details but where to be at
three o'clock in the morning
and a call on when to take him down.
"This shouldn't be so hard all we have to do is sit and wait and shoot
him when we get a call, hell he's going to even tell us where to find
him."
"Yeah it sounds that simple doesn't it?" Chance asks knowing this
wasn't going to be like the others.
When night arrives they sit on the trunk of the car and just take in
the atmosphere in silence, the air is mild tonight even with the wind
blowing constantly. Chance pulls out a cigarette and uses his hand to
block the flame of the lighter as he lights it.
"You should really stop smoking." Xavier says.
"It's not the cigarettes I like it's the lighter, and it has to have
something to light."
Xavier smiles a little when his Chance's phone rings. Xavier looks at
his watch and noticed it was a couple minutes before three. Chance
answers and listens to the instructions he is given and hangs up
without saying a word. After he flicks the cigarette away he takes the
phone and throws it into the river.
"Let's go." He says and they enter the car.
As they drive Chance says nothing. Xavier is used to his quiet partner
but he can tell he has something is on his mind.
"You think this is a set up?" He asks.
"No, this is not a set up but I don't think this is going to be an easy
one."
"Come on the guy is homeless." Xavier says.
"Why would a big wig pretty boy want a homeless guy killed? There is a
lot more going on here than we know."
"Oh well, honestly I really don't care I just want the money."
"How many clips do you have?"
"We are only going to need one Chance, calm down."
"How many clips do you have?" Chance asks again but with a firmer
voice.
"I have two on me and two in the trunk." He answers.
"Get the other two out when we get there."
They arrive at the location. Chance looks at the address of the
apartment building.
"This is it." He says looking around for witnesses.
"I thought he was homeless?" Xavier asks.
"We were instructed to go to the roof."
"Let's do this s**t then." Xavier responds cracking his neck.
"What does he look like?" He adds.
"I was told when we see him we would know who to take out."
The two walk into the building and enter the elevator. They emerge a
couple of floors from the top and take the stairs the rest of the way
as they put on there gloves and check their guns and loading one into
the chamber. When they reach the rooftop door they stop and observe
the alarm system on the door.
"I got this." Xavier says reaching into his pocket and pulling out
some small tools for the job.
A couple of severed wires and the alarm is no more. Before they emerge
through the door they both fit their silencers on their gun. They
quietly open the door and walk out onto the windy roof top. Chance
uses his hands to give Xavier silent instructions and he nods his head
understanding before walking the opposite direction. He looks around
as he walks and stops when he spots a figure sitting on the edge
looking out at the city. It had to be him. He studies him for a second
as he can only see him from the back with a hood over his head and a
wooden sword strapped to his back. The man stands up on the edge and
without turning around and Chance raises his gun. He turns around with
a quick pivot step and faces the stranger. The mix of night and his
hood puts a shadow over his face but Chance can see that he has a mask
on only displaying a glow of green on his covered eyes coming from the
light on top of the building.
Neither makes a move for a second as they peer at each other. Suddenly
a voice comes from the other side of him.
"Don't jump! Okay, go ahead it will make this easier for us." Xavier
says.
The man looks at him in silence. Chance raises his gun and the man
quickly looks back at him before jumping off the edge. Xavier is the
first to reach the side as he sees that he only leaped onto another
rooftop and was getting away. He raises his gun and begins to fire.
"This son of a b***h is fast. I can't even hit him."
"What are you waiting on lets go." Chance says running and jumping
onto the other roof and chasing.
Xavier follows suit and jumps. As they run they take shots at him but
he is as agile as a rabbit as he moves around roof vents and hops onto
building after building swiftly. They keep up with him until he gets
to the edge of a fire escape and quickly goes down with a leap. When
they get to the ladder they look down and only see darkness.
"What the f**k?" Xavier asks a little out of breath.
"I told you this wasn't going to be easy."
"What is he some kind of super hero or something?"
"I don't know but let's finish this s**t." Chance says and quickly
goes down the escape into the darkness.
The alley is dark with just a dim light that hangs in the back of a
diner so the workers can take out the trash. The two hit men slowly
and quietly walk with their fingers on the trigger and try to mentally
decipher the noises between the rats and cats rummage through the
trash cans.
"Where the hell is he?" Xavier whispers while looking behind him.
"If he hit the street he's gone but if he went this way he's
cornered." Chance responds.
They walk deeper into the alley and Chance stops Xavier with his arm
and points at the dead end where the man faces them staring with his
bokken in his right hand and the tip resting on his shoulder. At his
feet are two rats but it doesn't seem to phase him as one walks across
his foot.
"Okay no more running for you." Xavier says pointing his gun.
He squeezes the trigger but the man is one step ahead as he dodges
with a jump to the nearest wall and with a flick of the wrist throws a
knife knocking the gun from Xavier's hand. Before he reaches the
ground he throws a handful of smoke bombs below him.
Chance and Xavier can't see anything for the moment and begin to cough
putting their arms to their mouths trying to shield some of the smoke.
Suddenly he feels the gun being knocked from his hands and receives a
kick to the chest sending him flying out of the cloud of smoke and
onto the ground. Xavier is still in the mist and begins to look around
for an exit to the smoke screen but is confused. Suddenly he sees a
green glow of the man's eyes in front of him. Chance slowly picks
himself up as he begins to hear the sounds of punches coming from the
cloud. Xavier fly's out and is stopped by a trash can as he hits the
ground. The smoke clears and the man stands waiting in the same
position. Chance smiles a little looking over at his friend getting up
while rubbing his head.
"You are good." He says calmly.
"F**k that I'm better!" Xavier yells and rushes at him with his
knife out.
With a thrust Xavier stabs at him and when he misses takes a slice
that only connects the blade to the brick wall. The man kicks him in
the back and pushes him against the other wall. Chance waits until his
friend is clear before rushing in to help, as he reaches him the man
does a back flip over him and while in the air takes out a blow gun
firing a dart from it. Chance anticipated an attack from the rear so
he quickly moves without looking and it misses him. The man lands and
crouches down with his hand on the ground and his head down with his
weapon in his other hand. Chance reaches behind him and pulls out a
knife. When the man stands up he points motioning Chance to look
behind him. He is hesitant to oblige but slowly turns around to see a
dart in his friend neck.
"Is he dead?" Chance asks.
The man shakes his head answering no without saying a word.
"Just trying to level the playing field huh, that's cute."
The man turns and quickly darts away running and Chance follows. As
the man gets to the ladder of the fire escape he leaps grabbing on and
climbs up fast. Chance is behind him as he climbs up and reaches the
roof. The man is nowhere in sight as he looks around when suddenly
instinct tells him to move and he feels the wind of a missed kick. It
leaves his opponent open and he thrusts an open palm strike to his
sternum backing him up and holding the area.
"I'm not that easy buddy." Chance says they stare at each other.
The man gets in a stance and Chance does the same with a smile. When
the two come together it is almost like a rehearsed dance as one block
is countered by another and each hit landed is returned even harder
than the last. The man leaps back and draws the wooden sword.
"If that's how it’s going to be; then bring it." Chance says.
The man rushes in and swings but Chance dodges and as he continues to
swing he misses his others as well. He takes one more and it connects
at Chances side and with a painful catch he pens the sword to his side
with his arm and sends a punch to the masked mans face making him fall
back leaving the sword behind. Chance loosens his arm and the wood
hits the concrete.
"That s**t is not going to work on me." He says looking at the man
getting back up.
"I gotta admit you've got some skill. On another day and another place
I would have fun seeing just how much you know, but I have a job to
do."
The man leaps in the air and in a quick motion throws some knives
Chance's way but he jumps to the side rolling on the ground as they
ricochet where he stood and it proves to be exactly what the man
wanted as he takes the second to strike Chance as he gets up. He fly's
back and slides on the hard surface but doesn't take time to feel the
pain as he quickly returns to his feet for another attack. But the man
stands where his sword is and with his feet kicks it into his hand and
returns it to the sheath on his back.
With a quick motion he throws down some more smoke grenades but the
wind blows it away as he seems to vanish and appearing on the edge of
the building.
"Are you going to make me chase you again?" Chance asks.
He begins to run towards him when the man leaps with a back flip off
of the building. When Chance reaches the edge he looks down seeing
only water below.
"Yeah you're a good one." He says knowing the mark has gotten away.
He pulls out his pack of cigarettes and finds one that's not broke and
begins to walk to the fire escape. When he gets to the latter
something tells him to turn around and when he does he sees the man
crouching on a higher building looking down at him. The two stare at
each other for a second before the man quickly moves on.
"We'll see each other again, believe that."
Xavier wakes up in the car on the highway sitting next to Chance who is
driving.
"Did you get him?"
"No I didn't." Chance responds.
"We're not done then! Where are you going?"
"We're going home Xavier."
"F**k that, we still have a job to do."
"It's over dog."
"What? Hell no it's not!"
"Xavier you are still a rookie so I don't expect you to know any
better. But sometimes there are things deeper then we can see.
Sometimes you've got to know when to pull out of a job that you aren't
getting paid enough to do. And this is a perfect example of one of
those times. Fifty isn't enough to take him out and that Tim guy knows
it."
"So we are just going to abandon a hit just like that?" Xavier asks.
"Yes we are, besides we got twenty just for attempting it."
To be continued.
