Valid Beyond MaliceA Story by Dez H.Chance is asked for his help when he can't get his own hitters to help.
I had a nice quiet day as I played with my son most of it and sat and chilled with him the rest. I put him to bed reading him a story and talked to him about whatever his seven year old mind wanted to express before telling him goodnight. I then went to my cabinet and grabbed my bottle of Jack Daniels and proceeded to my living room where I sat on my couch turning on the television and watched whatever the hell I wanted to. My name is Chance Montgomery and a little about me is that I used to be a contract killer before retiring the hard way and a faked death and disappearance I live a new life. I still dabble in the life because that was my career it’s what I was good at, but I personally don’t kill anymore but have two that will at any given time if I receive a call. But that phone had been quiet for about at least six months and it didn’t bother me at all. Six months before was a storm; something was blowing up every week, but I or my people didn’t care. For them it was the thrill along with the money but for me it was all about the money. But lately it had been nice to spend the time my son and he deserved it. I took my drink down slowly right out of the bottle, I deserved it too when my phone rang; it was one o’clock in the morning and something told me not to answer. Against my better judgement I did it anyway hearing my son’s babysitter on the other end.
“Mister Grey I need your help please,” Her tiny delicate voice said.
She was there for me at any time of the night I needed her so I just told her sure and to come over. Her name is Stacy, a nineteen year old girl who I looked at like if my daughter had lived to be her age. It only took five minutes before she was at my knocking at my door I studied my surveillance cameras the whole time making sure it was only her before I buzzed her onto the estate from the gate at the end of my driveway. I let her in and she was on the phone talking Spanish to someone on the other end, half Dominican and Puerto Rican she walked in upset and I could tell this was going to be one of those nights for me. I could understand what she was saying as she told her mother that she had to watch my son for the night again. When she hung the phone she just stood and looked at me; caramel colored, petite and two long braids that went down to her a*s, she was a mixture of innocently cute and devilishly sexy all at the same time. I was curious on what she needed from me but the way my life went I wasn’t going to be surprised on if it was something I really didn’t want to do.
“What’s the matter Stacy,” I asked.
She seemed distracted as she looked at her phone and when it rang she answered on the first ring. She didn’t talk Spanish this time telling whoever it was that she was here with me. She talked for a second as I escorted her to my living room so she wouldn’t wake up my son. When she hung up she just looked at me again. “What’s going on?” I asked her. “I’m worried about my boyfriend Mister Grey, he’s always getting himself into some s**t that he wants to do by himself but tonight it’s different. I have a bad feeling like he’ll die if he goes on this one without someone watching his back.” “What’s this gotta do with me?” I asked her. “You have those two that always are there for you when you need them; could you call them and ask for their help for me?” She replied. “Who those two are none of your business.” “I only have five hundred dollars.”
That was not even enough to talk to them.
“So what do you want for your boyfriend Stacy?” I asked her already getting a headache for what I knew was going to be something on my expense. “I just need someone to watch his back, Mister Grey I love this man and I know he’s going to ask me marry him, but when he goes out tonight I know there’s going to be trouble. I know this man he’s going to see; he’s an a*****e drug dealer slash crackhead.”
I take a deep breath and rub my temples because I knew this streak of mine was too good to be true. I tell her to hold on as I leave the room before pulling out my phone. I call Xavier my protégé and first hitter for me.
“I’m sorry man, I’m in Vegas with this fine a*s honey. I’ma send you a picture of her and I want you to tell me what you think.” He said.
My second and last call I could make was to my red haired hitter named Camille.
“I’m sorry honey I’m visiting my father and we are actually seeing my grandmother I haven’t seen in nine years.” She said and I had to respect it. Neither was around to help with the situation so I was stuck with it for myself. I had to make a decision and my first one was to tell the girl that this had nothing to do with me. But it had been on occasions where I’d called her at five o’clock in the morning when a call came in and I had to make a move just to get a cup of coffee to talk about a job. I felt like I owed this girl something and I guess that’s where my weakness lied. I felt I owed too many people for s**t I shouldn’t have, but she came in in the clutch when I needed someone to help me out and on the inside it bugged me. We all have to at some point have to pay our dues but I still wasn’t sold on this whole s**t.
“Sorry Stacy I can’t help you.” I told her.
She got this sad look on her face and it reminded me of the one my oldest daughter would get when I told her no.
“Please Mr. Grey…please…please…please.” She begged. “I’m sorry Stacy, my people aren’t around and I just can’t do it.” “Why,” “Because it’s not my problem, that’s why. If your boyfriend puts himself in a situation like the one he’s about to then he has to deal with the consequences of his own actions.” I told her. “The reason why he’s doing it is all my fault; I owe the dude money for a pound of herb I got and he actually owes my boyfriend some money so that’s why I never paid him. He threatened my life so that’s why my boyfriend stepped in.”
When I heard her life had been put on the line I began to really think about my daughters and what I would’ve done if someone threatened either one of them. I thought about what I did to the man that killed them then she asked me again.
“Please Mr. Grey; I really need your help. If this man sees me I don’t know what will happen, I could be dead by tomorrow night if nothing can be done.”
All I could think by then was how if something did happen to her after knowing about it on how I would feel; I remember when I didn’t feel. I missed the days when I didn’t care about anything but my money; my conscience was numb to all but my family. Her phone rang and I could tell it was her boyfriend by the way she talked to him. She told him to hold on as she took the phone away from her ear.
“Can he come over here for a second?” She asked.
My first thought was to tell her hell no but it was the way she looked at me hoping I would say yes.
“I guess.” I replied before I thought more about it.
I told her I would be back as I went to my room to put on some clothes. In a quick thought I grabbed my silencer from my dresser drawer and fitted it to the forty-five. The next move would be to go downstairs and put two in her forehead then wait for her boyfriend to get here and do the same to him. I walked down the hall and stopped at my son’s room then watched him for a second as he slept. The look on his face said he saw Heaven while in his slumber; I looked down at the gun in my hand and shook my head thinking how much he loved having her around and how handy she was when I needed to make money. I exhaled a sigh of frustration and tucked it at my waist behind my back because I could still need it. Returning back down to my living room she sat on the couch until she saw me then she stood up.
“Are you going to help me Mr. Grey?”
I still hadn’t made my mind up but she kept asking and the more she did the more I saw my oldest daughter Iyana again.
“Please help us Mr. Grey.” She said.
I looked away from her and could hear my daughter’s voice.
“Please daddy…If you don’t I don’t know what’ll happen to me.”
I lowered my head and could only picture the things I have done to others. I’d tortured, maimed, and killed so many that I had lost count. I turned around and looked at her but this time I saw her; my Iyana at the age of nineteen and my heart melted.
“Tell me about him.” I instantly responded. “Who,” “The stranger that’s coming to my house.”
She told me his name was Giovanni Bishop an ex-military soldier who she had been with for the past year. She told me everything she could before the buzzer from my entrance gate went off. When I answered he said it was him but just like with her I went to my camera monitors and watched him all the way to my door and still hesitated before letting him. I had to warn her before he got into my house though about me.
“If he does anything out of the way you won’t have to worry about that dude killing him because I’m going to put a bullet right between his eyes tonight.” “I knew there was something about you.” She responded. “The only thing you need to know about me is that I don’t do business like this.”
I buzzed him in the gate and looked at him as he parked a new model Mercedes in front of my door. Before I officially opened the door for him I looked back at her one more time giving her one last chance to back out but she had her trust in him. I opened my house to him and he entered nobly with his hands in his pockets coming in slowly. He shook my hand introducing himself at the same time but I still didn’t trust the whole thing as he greeted me first.
“Mr. Grey how you sir, I am…” “I know who you are, come in.” I interrupted.
I let him in and she ran up and hugged him instantly. I stood there for a minute while they kissed and stopped their greeting before they began f*****g on my couch. “Alright what the hell is going on and why should I care?” I ask.
They ceased and he just stood looking at me with a serious face. He stood about six feet; dark skinned almost resembling Tupac with an earring in his nose. I could tell just off looking at him he had a cockiness about him as his eyebrow arched and he stared at me with a mild grin.
“Sir if you don’t mind I would like to talk to you alone.” He said. “I need your gun.” I demanded before our meeting continued.
He reached at his waist and I stopped him reaching and grabbing it for myself while keeping my hand on my own. I knew it was going to be something about this I wasn’t going to like but I obliged and told him to follow me to my office.
“Stacy you know where the fridge is; go get yourself a soda and if Donovan wakes up take care of that for me please.” I say to the girl. “I got you Mr. Grey.” She replied.
I showed him how to get there but never led, I’ve shot a few in the back of the head with that trick. I think he could sense my caution about him as he would look back at me and give a slight laugh as I kept my arm behind my back the whole time. When we reached it I sat at my desk and he helped himself at my liquor cabinet.
“Whiskey huh, I’m more of Remy man myself.” He said looking at my bottle of Jack Daniels. “Alright Giovanni Bishop what’s this all about, you two are f*****g with my personal time.”
He walked and sat in the seat across from me then gave me a grenchy grin.
“Well Mr. Grey, this piece of s**t does not only owe me some money but he has threatened my girl and now I must make a move, plus I can make some money at the same time. I tried to give him some time; you know put him some type of payment plan but he has fucked up now. I deeply care about shorty and he wants to do this when he knows she’s my girl, he’s gotta pay for this lame s**t he’s doing.” “So how are you going to fix this?” I ask. “I just need to talk to him to get this straight and make things right before I have to move onto drastic measures.” “Drastic measures,” “You should know Mr. Grey; you know the good thing about being in the military is that that you make a lot of good contacts. I have brothers that can go into backgrounds of some of the most sought after people in the world for me. I can remember seeing a man that murdered multiple pedophiles and they said he died in a house fire. An ex-hitman for an infamous syndicate, now I know that there are those can fake a death and I can remember seeing it on the news thinking that it would a perfect opportunity for someone of that caliber to get away if he didn’t really catch a bullet while on the couch before the house burned down.” “It’s good you kept up with current events back then. What does that have to do with me?” I asked.
I instantly reached behind my back and put my gun on my desk in front of him thumbing the hammer. He kept a smirk on his face though and it made me really want to break my oath of not killing anymore, but I really wanted to know more before I put two in the young man’s head.
“Who sent you?” “Nobody sent me; I just really have a situation where I need some professional back up. You have some things in your background and it’s none of my business but this man has not only threatened my girl but he owes me some money so I gotta ride on this fool. I’ll keep this professional and even compensate you.”
I still didn’t like the whole situation but I thought about it looking into his eyes. I can spot a liar from eye contact alone and he really observed to be doing this for her but there was something in it for him too and that’s what I had to focus on right now. He’d done some homework on me so I had to wonder if this was an attempt on my life or if he just needed help. My first impression was to shoot him right on the spot but something begged me to be a part of this night just to see how this turned out. I loved the quiet life but sometimes I secretly enjoyed the adrenaline rush of a moment.
“I’m going to let you know now that if you try to f**k me in any way I’m going to kill you so fast that you’ll wake up in front of God or the Devil and ask them what the hell happened. Second if you claim to have any kind of professionalism then you know we’ll be having another conversation after this night if you don’t get your head blown off.” I say to him. “This is not a dummy mission and I know on the inside you’re doing this more for my girl than me, but now I’m throwing money onto table because tonight for some reason all of my back up is busy.” “You’re damn right.” I replied. “Then know that this’ll go down smooth.”
I was now completely interested on what kind of trouble I could get into for the night. “How much,” I asked. “It’ll be enough for the trouble, how is that?” He asked.
I gave him the hand signal to leave and he stood up.
“Right on again for this; a man of your stature would have killed me and I know it.” He said smiling at me. “I do this but if you call me out like this again I will put you somewhere nobody will ever smell you.” I respond. “Take this piece and give it to them when it’s time that’ll way you can keep your own.” He said. I put on my leather gloves before I took it and he gave a devious laugh but I didn’t find anything about this amusing. We went back out to my living room where Stacy met us worried about what was going on hugging him and asking in his ear. He played it cool though as he just kissed her and told her not to worry about anything. I didn’t have to go over anything with Stacy as she was the sitter for my boy already. We left and Giovanni insisted on driving his sports car to a club I had seen but never visited. “Club Eden” it was a strip club that money endowed people went to. They didn’t serve drinks because the women stripped completely naked but it didn’t stop you from bringing your own or just getting drunk before you came in. When we pulled up in front he was instantly treated like he belonged; valet grabbed his keys and quickly grabbed the twenty dollar tip welcoming him back. He shook up with those that he knew at the front door while looking at the line then I recognized an associate of mine amongst the ordinary and went to him shaking his hand bringing it in for a hug, they called him Freddy Kruger; a Vice Lord leader cold blooded killer back in the day he would eliminate rivals while they slept now, he ran a small syndicate of his own. It was nights I helped him when I worked for my uncle when we would just wait and politic I told Giovanni to get him and his girl in and it was done; if I needed another gun he would be the one. When I walked in it was the same old scene I had saw before; music playing, girls on their grind, and suckers getting their money took, Giovanni pointed out two females telling me what they drank and we separated while he did his thing. I sat down at a table that was away from the hype but it seemed like it gathered more leaches, I told a couple to get away from me before one refused to walk away. I looked at her kind of frustrated at the moment then stopped at the sight of her. It had been years since I had seen her from my old city; they call her Livewire and she belonged to an all-female gang called JLG, “Just Lovable Girls” I had no words and she just stared at me.
“I thought you were back home,” I said to her. “And I thought you were dead, so I guess what we both think don’t mean s**t.” She replied.
We didn’t say anything for a second until she just smiled and kissed me on the lips. We had a thing back in the day when I did work for her boss and I knew if there was anything to start tonight she would definitely bust shots for me. She grabbed the closest waitress without breaking the eye contact we had. “Two shots of tequila,” She demanded. “No, I need to be on point right now baby and…”
She cut me off fast dismissing anything I had to say. “We are in front of each other again; I thought you were dead and you thought I was back home we will be taking a shot.”
“I might need you tonight baby.” I said and she smiled at me grabbing my face with both hands. “Whatever you need I’ll be ready for; I own half of this and I have girls that’ll do what I tell them to do. You need help tonight and it’s all yours, but you have to promise to take care of me afterwards.” She responded. “We’ll catch up baby, but right now I’ve got some things to handle first.”
She liked that kind of talk as it seemed to turn her on as she grinded in my lap rubbing on my head. I watched the door and those around it that Giovanni went into until he came out and came to where I was sitting. He waited until I waved Livewire away before he spoke.
“We just had a seat to open up at the poker table.” “What is on the agenda for the night?” I asked him. “You’ll just have to follow my lead.” He answered standing up walking away from the table.
I followed until he stopped me at the door.
“I hope you’re good at distractions. And by the way they’re going to take that gun now.” He said before we entered. Two men checked me and took it before I entered seeing two others sitting at a card table in a smoky room with a single light swinging above them. I sat down as they looked at me suspect, I watched him with a simple grin until he broke the ice for me,
“This is my boy Grey.” He Introduced.
They didn’t care until I pulled out some money.
“I hope this muthafucka can play.” One said. “Don’t worry about that, he can handle his own.” Giovanni said.
We played a couple of hands until it came to my deal. I looked at him and he gave me the look like it was that time. I began to hand to hand shuffle the cards until the ace of spades dropped out and everyone stopped talking and looked at me. I picked it up and put it in the middle of the deck shuffling again until it dropped out again. The two started debating on if I was cheating now and Giovanni began to bet that I couldn’t do it for a third time. With just a smile on my face I go back to hand to hand shuffling as they watch until a card falls face down and they both stare look at it as I pick it up. I look at it and they look at me while Giovanni puts down a stack of hundreds.
“Call it…Call it…” He said grinning.
I just looked at them for a second and when I dropped it they didn’t even get to see the card before Giovanni put a silenced bullet in both of their heads. As they sit there with their eyes open and blood slowly poured out of the hole I just look over at him as he pulled out his phone and took a picture. He looked at my third card seeing it was one more ace of spades. “I like that, now we walk out of here I have something for you to see and I think you’ll appreciate it.”
We left the room as calmly as we went in; I have to admit I was surprised. I looked to the corner to my left and saw Freddy Kruger looking at me; I nodded my head and he knew I was cool. Before I reached the exit Livewire stopped me.
“I want have breakfast with you.” She said and put her number in my pocket.” “Baby if I make it past the night I’ll make you lunch too.” I whispered back in her ear.
She smiled and kissed me on the cheek as I walked out. We walked to the back where an empty warehouse sat dark and looking like trouble; if he was going to try anything it was going to be at this moment. I watched him carefully as he entered first and saw he knew where he was going pulling out a flashlight.
“You know I’ve seen you doing karate s**t with your son in the backyard when I climbed out of Stacy’s window when her mother comes home.” He said. “It’s called Tai Chi and shouldn’t you have been concerned on not falling to your death from the second story?” “As you’ll find out in a minute; I’m a man that’ll be alright.”
I cautiously follow him to a room upstairs of the factory where a light skinned man sat zip tied to a chair bloody looking like he had been beat up.
“Mr. Grey I want you to meet Scott, he is the man that has broken four rules that a man should live by. You never f**k with a man’s money, seeds, mother or lady. He has violated and he must pay for it.”
I could smell an odor of gas in the air and didn’t speak at first until I saw him pulling out a cigarette and lighter.
“Some s**t should be forgiven and just saw as a lesson for the other person.” I said trying to defuse the situation. “Sometimes that the case and I agree with you. But let me tell you about Scott here Mr. Grey, just last year he slept with a twelve year old girl by starting out as her science tutor. Her father didn’t like that too much so he talked to me about it and gave me an envelope with some reasons why I should care too.”
He pulled out his phone and began taking pictures of him.
“That’ll make daddy happy.” He said laughing.
I once killed these same kind of degenerate b******s and seeing him made me want to shoot him on the spot but after gathering my thoughts I was past this stage in life.
“But when I get paid to kill one of these types of fuckers I feel so good. I have children Mr. Grey but I only have one daughter. If someone ever did that kind of s**t to her I would… well let’s just say it would get ugly. But this one has honestly been a pain in my a*s for a while and to get paid for this one is just an extra added bonus for me, but I know who you are and I just wanted to show you this for future reference so if you don’t have someone on deck to do a job for you that my resume is on your desk.” He said pulling out his gun.
I thought he was going to put a bullet in his head from there but he began pistol whipping him. The beating lasted for forty minutes straight while he talked to him through the whole thing. He took two more pictures and walked back by me lighting a cigarette.
“As you can see I am well worth my time, however you want it done it’ll be done. This mothafucka is getting ready to burn, do you want to do the honors?” He asked.
I have killed pieces of s**t like this before but it was mine; I was passed this stage in my life and I had a son I had to raise. Sure I thought about; grabbing that flame and dropping it watching him burn as I reminisced about the smiles on my girl’s faces but the fact still remained that this contract wasn’t mine.
“You might as well finish it now; this is your job, I appreciate the whole demonstration but this is not how I do business. You have everything covered but I have a son to get back too, finish it.” I respond.
He shrugged his shoulders and dropped the cigarette, the flame trail carried right to him where he burned screaming and jumping around until the tape burned away and Giovanni put a bullet in his head. He took a couple more pictures and drove me back to my house. We concluded the night with Stacy walking out as we pulled up; she hugged him then gave me one thanking me once again. She got in his car and we stood in front of each other without a word being said for the moment. He smiled first before breaking the silence.
“So if you need another you can I get a call?” He asked. “If I need you I will call, but if you don’t answer after the first one don’t ever show your face to me again. I know your girl is in the front seat now but I need her back tonight. I have some business to handle and she helps all of this to get done. Don’t mix any of our entanglements and we can continue to smile every day but confuse it once and it’ll be your last, go have breakfast I suggest the diner on the corner but have her back in an hour.
“Okay I got you.” And he walked away.
I pulled out my phone and dialed the number Livewire gave me. When she answered I told her to be ready when she got off to have breakfast and lunch with me and she was more than reluctant. It was almost six o’clock, I was mentally exhausted and I knew it wasn’t over, as I headed for my room my son exited his.
“Hi dad.” He said rubbing his eyes. “What’s up lil dude,” I can only answer. “I had a dream me and you were fighting monsters.”
I smile with his presence as well as the sight of him.
“And look at us now; we are still standing right here to live another day.” I respond.
He smiled at me and couldn’t help but to smile back. We went into my bedroom where I told him how I needed to handle some things for the next couple of hours. He understood plus I knew he had a crush on Stacy so I was good. I might be in over my head but that day hasn’t come yet so I keep going, I think about my past a lot but always have to live for my future so it keeps others from breaking my present. Things went good for me that day and I even got to come home to taking a nap with my son, then that damn phone rang. I knew it was time to get back to work. © 2016 Dez H.Author's Note
