Expectancy without Familiarity

Expectancy without Familiarity

A Story by Dez H.
"

Group of professionals come together for a job and it doesn't pan out the way they expected.

"

“What the f**k went wrong?” Xavier asked extremely angry about what had happened.

He was three blocks away in the window of an abandoned hotel with a sniper rifle. The plan was simple; collect the money and get out. It was six of them and they were all professionals that did high paying jobs for this particular client; the old man. That’s the only name they all knew, he never dealt with them in person it was always through his son in his Italian restaurant after closing and he would only contact them all once a year.

“I don’t know, all I saw was them all pulling their guns out after the b***h got shot.” Richpiece responded.

She wasn’t supposed to be harmed; it wasn’t a stipulation but for the first shot fired why did it have to be her; the son’s wife? After that all hell broke loose, at least fifteen gun wielding men against three in the office, two outside, and one sniper being the guardian angel.

“F**k that, I wasn’t in there!” Richpiece shouted.

He nervously said pacing the hotel room.

“Who shot first?” Xavier asked.

“Buck did that s**t!”

“Where is he?”

“I don’t know, when the bullets started flying everybody split ways.”

“Killed her fast didn’t he?”

“With one in her head and two in her chest; yeah I didn’t see that s**t coming.”

There was a knock at the door and everybody ceased their conversation staring at it but not making the first move until Xavier walked to the door.

“Yeah, who’s there?”

“Grim mother f****r, let me in.”

The door only had time to unlock before he pushed the door open. Xavier backed up grabbing his gun but not pulling it out seeing him.

“What the f**k was that?” He asked mad.

“We don’t’ know; Buck shot the chick and s**t went wild.” Richpiece said walking around the room.

“That wasn’t part of what was supposed to go down.” Grim said banging his fist on the dresser.

“Who grabbed the money?” Xavier asked.

“Chance did but one guy grabbed him and they started fighting; the guy pushed him out in the hall and another ran out with them with a gun out shooting.” Richpiece said.

“What about that new guy?” Xavier asked.

“He caught two in the chest when s**t started.” Richpiece said.

“Are we still going to get paid?” Grim asked.

“I don’t know after that bullshit.” Richpiece replied.

Xavier walked to the window and looked out, rain poured and thunder rolled and inside he was worried about what the outcome was going to be while Grim paced the floor and Richpiece began to roll a joint.

Another knock came to the door and Grim walked to it quickly.

“Yeah.”  He said.

“It’s Chance.”

He opened the door and another pawn stood there with the briefcase at his side and a cigarette in his mouth. He walked in and put the case on a table then took off his rain drenched jacket and laid it over a chair.

“What the f**k did Buck shoot that lady for?” Grim asked.

“I don’t know.”

“Where is he at now?”

“I don’t know; the last time I saw him we had just shot our way out of warehouse, he said he wasn’t done and ran back in.”

“Why didn’t you help him?” Xavier asked.

“The job was to get the money and to get out, it wasn’t for the chick getting shot; and it certainly was not shooting my f*****g way out of a place full of people. I didn’t help him because I had the money and you all disappeared, I was low in ammo when we barely made it out.”

Richpiece puts the joint in his mouth and starts to light it.

“Don’t smoke that in here.” Chance said.

“My nerves are on edge; m***********s shooting at us, that kid got shot right in front of me, and now I don’t even know if we’re going to get paid. So I’m going to smoke this.”

“That’s why I don’t like working with rookies. The last thing we need is someone smelling that s**t and reporting it making security come to this room with the four of us sitting in here with a million dollars in our possession. We don’t need any attention, so if you want to smoke that s**t go outside on the balcony.” Chance said looking at Richpiece.

“It’s raining out there.”

“I don’t give a f**k if it was a blizzard going on out there; you are not smoking that in here.”

“You know I’m getting sick of people being scared of the big bad hit man. I’m not afraid of you though; I know your weakness; I know that your family is the most important thing to you.” Richpiece said.

“Weakness; I have no weaknesses little man.  Your former boss found that out; do you want to go down that long dark road of finding my weakness?”

“Hey you mother fuckers calm down.” Grim said.

“Now hold on Grim; did you mention my family?” Chance asked with a sarcastic smile on his face in awe.

Richpiece was well known for his talking and sometimes he let things fly out of his mouth before he thought about it; he had his share of body counts but didn’t have the killing nature in him, but he always backed up his talk with violence if the moment called for it. The two had bad blood for a long time; but in reality he didn’t want to face him because the hit man’s reputation made him feared by even those he didn’t know, but Richpiece didn’t back down.

“Yeah I said…” He started before he saw him stand up.

Xavier stepped up quickly in front of Chance putting his arm across his chest.

“Calm down buddy, we have to be professional in here,”

Chance smiled at him.

“Besides I got a silencer in the car; I could plug him when we leave.” He whispers to him telling him to calm down some more patting his ribs.

Grim started to pace the floor.

“Where the f**k is Buck?” He yelled.

The men couldn’t get paid without him; he was the connection to the old man, without him none of them got paid.

“Maybe he’s dead.” Richpiece said.

“F**k this I’m out of here.” Grim said.

It was obvious that he was nervous about the whole thing; police sirens were in the distance and the whole thing went down in the middle of the day when people passed by frequently. Someone was bound to hear the echoed shots going off in that empty place.  When Grim and Richpiece came out of the building it was out of the front door and even though by standers were shocked they probably could’ve still seen their faces while panicking and running away.

“He’ll be here.” Chance said.

“How do you know?” Grim asked.

“I know because I’m here right now.”

“You said he ran back in. They could’ve ghosted his a*s.”

“He’s not dead.”

“How the f**k do you know that?” Richpiece asked.

Chance put his hand on the gun in the holster.

“Because like me when this is in our hands; we don’t make mistakes.” He responded.

“How many did you take out?” Xavier asked.

“Four on the main floor and maybe three more coming out of the place.” Chance answered.

“I got three on the way out.” Grim said.

“I took about ten out!” Richpiece said hype.

“That means he got two.” Xavier said smiling sarcastically.

“F**k you, how many did you get?”

“Seven head shots, three chests, and one heart; you do the math.”

Chance smiled because he trained him; but he remembers the limp bodies that fell while he was behind cover reloading and looking at who was in the way of his exit. There is an awkward silence for a minute then they all started to brag on how they got out of there. They talk for a half an hour before patience begins to be a rare commodity again.

“I need to smoke this blunt before I kill one of you mother fuckers.” Richpiece said putting it in his mouth.

“You’re not smoking that in here.” Chance said again.

“Man, f**k you I’m a grown a*s man. You don’t own me.”

“I do right now.”

“How do you figure that?” Richpiece asked smiling.

“Because I’m letting you still breathe.”

Richpiece got upset and walked his way and Chance stood up with a smile on his face and his arms out inviting any challenge. The two get face to face when suddenly a knock came from the door. Grim opened it and Buck stood there with his left arm in a make shift sling and a cigarette in his mouth looking exhausted.

“It’s about f*****g time, where have you been?” Grim asked.

Buck didn’t answer as he walked past him water dripping on the floor going to a chair and sitting down. Chance walked to him and sat the briefcase in front of him.

“You alright?” He asked.

“I’ll live.” Buck responded.

He reached in his pocket and pulled out five locker keys.

“Your money is at the train station in the locker with numbers that on the keys.”

“That’s all I need then; I’m out of here.” Grim said picking up one.

The rest of the men grabbed theirs.

“Never a dull moment when you are around Buck, I’m glad I don’t see you often.” Xavier said.

He walked to the door and stopped.

“Chance do you need a ride?”

“Yeah I’ll meet in the car.” He answered.

Xavier exited and Richpiece grabbed his key off the table.

“Always a pleasure; don’t call me next year. And Chance; f**k you.” He lit his weed and walked out of the hotel room.

Grim walked up to Buck.

“I’ve heard you were a crazy son of a b***h but now I know it for a fact. I’m glad you made it out, I had my doubts but I was wrong. Chance, keep in touch brother.”

He shook Buck’s hand then Chance’s.

“Stay safe comrade, I’ll be in touch with you.”

Grim walked out leaving just the two of them alone. Chance sat down across the table from Buck.

“Will you make sure Tommy’s wife and kids get his share?” Buck asked.

“Yeah I’ll take care of it.”

“Is it all in here?” He asked patting the briefcase.

“I guess so; I didn’t check it.”

Buck opened it and eye balled the money.

“Did you doubt me too?” Buck asked.

“You know better than that; we’re cut from the same cloth, I knew you would be here.”

“I have to get this to the old man.”

Chance grabbed the last two keys on the table.

“What the f**k happened; why did you kill her?”

“Do you remember the call I got right before we entered the building?” Buck asked.

Chance recalled the moment his phone rang, they all joked that it was one of his women.

“Yeah I remember.”

“The old man told me to do it at the last minute, I knew about it right before we entered but I didn’t have time to brief everybody and I certainly didn’t have time to answer any questions. If I would’ve said anything at that moment they would’ve been all nervous and s**t and it could’ve went a lot worse. I knew you were going to be okay because you know me and you know how we collaborate, but it had to be done.”

“We were out of there, why did you run back in?”

“I had to get the proof that she was dead.” Buck responded.

“Do you need me to make a call for that bullet in your shoulder?”

“No I’ve got somebody, I’m on my way to them when I leave here.”

Chance stood up and shook Buck’s hand.

“Keep in touch.” Chance said and walked to the door when Buck called out to him.

“I’ve got another job coming up in a couple of months and I’m going to need someone to watch my back; can I depend on you?”

“You know how to get ahold of me, but I better get more than this job.”

“We’ll talk.” Buck replied.

Chance shook his hand and left the room. Even though he hated impromptu changes his old partner would do at the last minute he always had his back when the moment came around, as long as the money was right; a job was initially at the end just another job.
