Chapter 1

Chapter 1

A Chapter by Daniel Rodriguez
"

The Legend of Icarus has a new twist and Ikari of the Lost Clan gets some startling news.

"
The Planet was named Oasis. It had three moons and no concept of civilization to advance to the stars. The people on the planet had been held back by the collective proud ignorance of their culture. Above the planet, so they believed, lay the realms of the gods. The titans chief of all.

To know the story of Ikari Of the Lost Clan, one must look to the fool, Icarus. Icarus was proud and foolish. Through knowledge of magic and other forbidden things, did he not fly too close to the sun and fell? So then when he did fall, it could be said his teachings became that of the people.

The people of Oasis see Icarus as something akin to a creation myth. One must never fly to close to the sun. One must never reach for the stars. That is what the children of Death Sector were taught most of all.

Before the story of Ikari is told, there is another myth; a sequel of sorts.

When Icarus fell he was greeted by the villainous mad Titan Tiger. Tiger wanted to end all life and crush it beneath him. Icarus sacrificed himself to seal the Titan away. Through his sacrifice, Icarus was finally allowed to enter paradise. The children of the Death Sector proclaim, as they tell themselves, he will one day return to save the lives of those who are to be sacrificed to the spirit of Tiger.

Those who sacrifice in the name of Tiger are followers of a strange underground cult called the Way of the Fangs. The children of the Death Sector refer to them as “the hated enemy.”

Oasis has a governing system, like that of a monarchy, an empire ruled by the rich and the distant over foreign lands. Riegning over all is the Emperor Justice the Wise. He is the leader of the Way of the Fangs. In one month, the next set of sacrifices are about to begin.

His only memory of his mom was an image, and barely one at that. He often wondered if it was merely a false memory. His mother was standing over his bed and through the corner of his eye as she stroked his dark hair, he could see a tin star fluttering reflected by the moon.

The muddy ground came upon him quick. He felt the impact and saw a bright flash as his eyes closed. He opened his eyes. Ikari of the Lost Clan, in other words, an unloved orphan with no last name to call his own. He got up. He always got up. The other children say he is the toughest to ever walk.

But just because he is tough does not mean he was good in a fight. The elbow that brought him down for a third time proved that point well. Ikari looked at his rival, Rolf who stared back in disbelief.

There were no adults in the town yet. Until the sun reached the middle of the sky, none would come. The wild ones would rule until then. Rolf was part of a teenage gang from the other side of the dark hills that overlook the more quiet section of the otherwise abandoned town.

Of the makeshift orphanage, three adults would stay until darkness descended and then they would head to their homes across the river where it was safe.

The fight was forced upon Ikari when Rolf tried to take hostages in order to negotiate for rations the orphans got from their caretaker. Comunications broke down instantly and Rolf challenged Ikari to a duel with fists.

This wasn’t the first time they fought and as Ikari watched as Rolf got slower with his punches, he realized he had a chance. By minute ten of the beat down, Ikari yelled and grabbed Rolf out of the air and slammed him hard. He became feral as instantly the fight was broken up.
“And if I see any of you on Lost Clan territory again…”

The fight was decalred a draw as both sides were too eager to claim victory. The statement had been made. Ikari knew when he locked eyes with Rolf, that the outcome would have been the same as the last several encounters.

“I thought I told you to be careful when you get into fights.”

Juniper, the youngest of the female caretakers put a sponge on the open wound just above Ikari’s eye. She was only 3 years older than Ikari however she always seemed more like a mother figure to him.

“They were trying to steal our food. We don’t have enough as is and with the boys from the south trying to steal from us in the night, and Rolf’s gang…”

“Still, you should be careful.”

“I can take him,” Ikari said with confidence.

“But I can’t take losing another one of you.” A tear came down her eye and Ikari thought of Bud, a fellow lost member who died of from some random illness. One minute he was fine, the next coughing and bedridden, eventually he just never got out of bed.

“I am not him.” Ikari tried to smile her way.

She was blond, but her features fragile. Her broken smile, one that showed disapointment made him want to die. “You are worse than Bud. You choose to be self destructive.”

She got up to leave.

“I can change, right?” He was really asking, ‘do you forgive me?’

“If you die, it might be better before they come for you.”

“Come for me?”

“The sacrifices, its one month from now. I heard they are eying this part of the city.”

Author's Note

Daniel Rodriguez
Chapter 1, so yeah, this is just the beginning, feel free to be brutal but be honest. I know the first chapter might not be alot to go on, but if you have ideas on how I can improve the first chapter, I would love to hear them and make quick adjustments.
