Departure

Departure

A Poem by R. T. Hyder

And just like that you fill up the empty spaces in your carry-on,

stuffing tees in one place and books in another
and the little figure beside you grins unknowingly,
his eyes as bright as the afternoon sun
as he pokes around in your toiletries,
mumbling babyisms to himself

while his tiny fingers explore the length of that dark rectangular shape,
and before anyone begins to notice
he finally manages to unzip your luggage as you disappear around the corner.
