The Moon Taught Me.

The Moon Taught Me.

A Poem by Amya Piñeda

I didn’t fall in love with you because I had you.

I feel in love with you because of your passion.

I saw the love you could give, I could see the love you had to offer.

Before you, I had only ever loved the moon.

I stayed up with her every night because she was my only friend, she was my only love.

When I met you, I stopped writing her poems-

And I started writing them for you.

I crave you more than the moon craves the sun,

But we both know that the sun and moon are forbidden to love each other,

For if they were to collide,

They would both be destroyed.

They would tear each other apart,

And they would be no more.

Her beauty would be torn away by the sun,

Because the sun could never handle the way she shines without him.

The sun could never handle the way she doesn’t need him or praise him,

Because she knows she’s worthy of praise herself.

The Moon showed me that I do not need you.

She gave me the strength to learn that loving you does not define me.

I asked her once, “How does it feel

when you share the sky with the sun?”

She told me it's like chasing a shooting star, and losing your way back home.
