Night Dancers

Night Dancers

A Poem by Moonflower

The smell of charred wood and tobacco,

fill the air, flames flicker across our faces,

I stare at an elder who sits opposite me,

beating steadily at his ancient drum,

It is made of Buffalo hide and bones, carved perfectly,

small depictions painted on the side, I

watch them, moving under the beat, dancing

Beads hanging from his long gray hair, click

against his shirt, he whispers the words.

I sit in my designated spot, fumbling with

my fingers, The Moon shining full and bright

I watch the Dancers, moving to the Elder's song,

Hair and feathers gleaming, their skin glistens,

in exertion, Dark eyes and smooth hair,

All painted and Adorned

Author's Note

Moonflower
This is stemming from an idea I had before I fell asleep last night, I'm going to write more onto it, and eventually, when I have time to focus on it, it will be a historical-fiction story, told from the point of view of a Native American teenager. I know its not completely original, but I've always loved both historical fiction and native americans, and will be a very fun project for me.

this is so enchanting that it captures drift of beauty like snow and flows like
a dream, the viion, an eternal glimpse of poetry threaded by the heart
of a word weaver who knows how to connect to the very source
of inner inspiration, i found myself capivated eternally, brilliant work.

Scene set, one wants more.

As one w/some Cherokee blood and empathy for indigenous values, I feel a sense of comfort in the scene, like a homecoming. Indeed, bring on the native drums and let's dance. White man's ways are gnawing at my Crazy Horse heart! ;-)

I just got a memory flash, an old Ray Bradbury story, I think it's "Perhaps We are Going Away," a poetically haunting story of the last days of a Native American tribe.

Anyway, fine evocation, and I hope you do follow up, fictionally.

I love this poem. The sights and sounds were like actually being there.
It reminds me of a medicine man who came to me in dreams for weeks
until I drew his face.

It visualized bonfire(in my mind) and you sitting beside it watching the tribal dance with crown of leaves on your head. :)
Wonderful poem. Made me crave for a evening like that.
