Rise and Shine, Wadey Boy!A Story by Denis VodyakhinThis is my first piece written after much reading books. So I use a lot of bookish words here (more than anywhere else). It had been Wade’s habit for many years to give up on his homework
before even getting down to it. That night, however, he achieved quite a
breakthrough. Having been tormenting himself over the rhetoric for half an
hour, he managed to figure out what a cactus and eternity have in common. The
assignment was seemingly baffling. Worth pondering over, though. “Since cactuses grow as they live…” - Wade mused aloud. “Well, screw
this!” On this note, Wade gave a wry smile to his obscure reflection in the
window before him. An instant later, he slammed his textbook shut, tossing it
over to the edge of the table. Running his right hand through his hair, he
leaned back in the chair, sighing. The following morning, on Friday, Wade could
have simply cut classes by taking off. No homework would have been handed in,
then.
“Nice thing!” " he said sarcastically, regarding the very window now. In
fact, it indeed is an invention no present-day inhabitant, whether a citizen or
not, can imagine his place without. The modern design using vinyl substance
makes it almost impervious to sound. Wade got a hold of a handle, tugged it in,
and rotated it forty five degrees afterwards. Keeping the window that way would
not hurt Wade’s slumber. He would drift off by continually breathing oxygen in
without catching cold.
The midnight traffic had no lack of dissonant sounds which, if magically
put all together, were capable of parting the city like a knife. Sirens blaring
would undoubtedly mean hurrying ambulances or police officers having a suspect
to pursue. Tires screeching indicated car drivers slamming down on the brakes.
Motorcyclists were the biggest irritation. Engines revving aroused the whole
neighborhood in a matter of a few seconds. Fortunately, this last type of
noise-makers had a tendency to vanish faster. In another second, an iron horse
sped off and eventually was no longer to be heard.
6:00 am. Wade’s sound-emitting device sprang to life. Annoying his ear
was a frequent buzz. It vaguely resembled the gate buzzing which is practical
in prisons. Grunting, Wade started fumbling beside his pillow for the shouting
beast. Having grabbed it, he tapped the snooze button so his dream might
resume. Nevertheless, these never-ending attempts to return to dreams to where
they ceased were fruitless.
Drowsily, Wade sat up and yawned ostentatiously while stretching out.
Finally, he pulled himself to his feet and staggered into the bathroom. The door
creaked open. Wade never wanted his eyes to be burned in the early morning.
Therefore, he did not switch on anything. When he was done with whatever needed
to be done, he walked out and back to his room. Being already refreshed a
little, Wade ensconced himself in the unmade bed. Without rushing, he was taking
his time gathering strength. Suddenly, a brilliant thought flashed through his
mind like a comet. From time to time, Wade vacillated between attending classes
like a model student and shirking away like an apathetical slacker. He pressed
the phone button to check what time it was.
The clock had hit 7:40 am. High time Wade got a move on! However, the
lazy part of him took over. "Screw first class! Gonna go to the second." " muttering as he
collapsed back onto the bed. Wadey boy snuggled up in the blanket like a new-born babe. Shortly, the
screen faded away. Nothing was as lullaby-like to our sleepyhead’s ears as the
washing-machine whirring closeby.
