Ssstatic

A Poem by Dennis Shanaberg
"

Let's change this static earth.

"

My heart starts hurting when I am alone.

Think of the friends that I had--the paths that they chose.

History repeats itself, or so the story goes.

Everyone reaps the seeds that they have sown.

For the twenty-first century, we’re still Neanderthals.

2012--the world is ending, or maybe it’s stalled.

Nothing’s moving forward. Maybe we should go back--

Before we learned of fire and burned all we could to black.

The charred embers of our invention--our society.

It’s an illusion of shadows on the wall that I can’t see.

It’s a joke played upon us by ancestors from before.

The jester has ruined me and my friends for sure.

Sss-Static.

Sss-Static.

This static earth.

Nothing has changed much since man was birthed.

Sss-Static.

Sss-Static.

Static interferes.

Comes between anything we try to accomplish here.

We are smarter than we used to be.

Yeah--we learned some things from history.

We all want to vote for this equality.

So Mr. President, you say it, but let it be.

Let it be, let it be--’Cuz all we need is love.

It’s what the world needs now--

Now more than ever because

We’ve got wars over seas,

And poverty spreads.  --Such a disease.

A black plague of hatred

--An epidemic of greed.

Someone needs to stand up.

Someone here needs to speak.

‘Cuz I’ve tried some praying,

But Jesus don’t seem to agree.

Sss-Static.

Sss-Static.

This static earth.

Nothing has changed much since man was birthed.

Sss-Static.

Sss-Static.

Static interferes.

Comes between anything we try to accomplish here.

I wanna be the voice of this generation,

But I am no loved teen idol sensation.

I don’t sing about sex, cash, and weed;

I mean not always.  No, it’s mostly

About some things that matter

The things that are poignant to me.

Wanting to change the status quo--

Mess with our messed up society.

I wanna be more than that before

Rise above this mediocrity.

But I don’t wanna be alone up there,

I need somebody to come there with me.

No, not just one--Not a lover, or a friend,

But a whole family stuck together to the end.

People together to help each other.

When you’re all family, you’re always helping your brother.

Sss-Static.

Sss-Static.

This static earth.

Nothing has changed much since man was birthed.

Sss-Static.

Sss-Static.

Static interferes.

Comes between anything we try to accomplish here.

Sss-Static.

Sss-Static.

Let’s change this static earth.

‘Cuz nothing has changed much since man was birthed.

Sss-Static.

Sss-Static.

Static always interferes.

Can’t let it get between what we will accomplish here.

Nice flow of thoughts in this poem. The static of life can leave us confused. I like the way you set-up the poem and the strong ending to the poem. Thank you for sharing the outstanding poetry.
