Hero Complex

Hero Complex

A Poem by Dennis Shanaberg
"

The complexities of a hero who finds he's not the one.

"

I was convinced I was the hero

It was in everything I tried to write,

But little did I not know

That I simply did not have the fight.

I’m just one person with so little weight

I try to take the weight of the world

But I need to leave it to its awful fate.

I am not a savior,

But I tell myself

I’ve got to save you

Gotta make you well.

It is the curse I’ve made

Inside this heart insane.

I feel the heavy weight

Of every single mistake.

Build my cross

And crucify me

Cuz I can’t live with

How small I am.

I can’t help

A single person

Much less saving the

Entire Earth.

Cannot find

The thin line

That I have to draw

Everytime they call.

Signal high

In the grey sky

Is for someone else

Who can do some good.

I am not a savior,

But I tell myself

I’ve got to save you

Gotta make you well.

It is the curse I’ve made

Inside this heart insane.

I feel the heavy weight

Of every single mistake.

The complexity of a hero

Who finds he’s not the one.

A hero complex is what I’ve got

It will never be gone.

I was convinced I was the hero

It was in everything I tried to write,

But little did I not know

That I simply did not have the fight.

I’m just one person with so little weight

I try to take the weight of the world

But I need to leave it to its awful fate.
