The Hero of the QuickSand Kingdom vs. The SureFiring SquadA Poem by Dennis Shanaberg
I wanted a Surefire/
Quickstart to something good, And for once in my life, Things seemed to work out as they should. But as it turns out Nothing ever turns out all right. Now, I’m turning inside out As it all turns off just like so many lights. Darkness. D-D-Darkness. I stutter as it swallows me. Deeper. Down. Down Deeper. Drowning breaths as I try to speak. With this final breath, I’m choking on every word. Now that I see death, All these words I’ve said, so pointless and absurd. I’d become a castle-- Stronger than a house of cards, But then the stained glass broke. Red sharp stabs from those colored shards. It’s cuz I found out I’m so much less than what I seem. I wish I could just shout out From closed eyes as nightmares fill my dreams. Darkness. D-D-Darkness. I stutter as it swallows me. Deeper. Down. Down Deeper. Drowning breaths as I try to speak. That Quickstart led me into quick sand. Now, I’m drowning deep. That Surefire was a morbid firing squad Waiting to fire on me. The quicksand reaches over my head As their bullets stain me in red. I hope that there is something left to mend With all the stupid words that I have said. With this final breath, I’m choking on every word. Now that I see death, All these words I’ve said, so pointless and absurd. Darkness. D-D-Darkness. I stutter as it swallows me. Deeper. Down. Down Deeper. Drowning breaths as I try to speak. © 2011 Dennis Shanaberg |
