The Double-Sided Bad Penny

The Double-Sided Bad Penny

A Poem by Dennis Shanaberg
"

A song to myself

"

You’ve always been a problem to the nth degree,

Third degree burning every person you meet.

The fire’s always burning inside,

And when it goes out, oh-you’ve lost your mind.

You’ve always been the savior of no one but you

Bearing the cross of every choice you choose.

The blood is always pumping through your lines,

But where is your heart because these lines aren’t fine.

A scoundrel.

A jackal.

A joker.

A shrew.

That’s what they all had said about you.

The white knight.

The savior.

All chivalrous and new.

You had such high hopes that that’s what you could do.

Your past-it has a habit of coming back ‘round-

Double-sided bad penny heads up on the ground.

The faces of both a frightful sight-

While the front just sneers, a smirk tails tries to hide.

Contentedness will forever be out of reach

‘Cuz you won’t practice the honesty that you preach.

Your hypocrisy is your identity,

And one day it will be all that anyone can see.

A scoundrel.

A jackal.

A joker.

A shrew.

That’s what they all had said about you.

The white knight.

The savior.

Chivalrous-through and through.

You had such high hopes that that’s what you would do.

You wanted forever for just a few days.

You want it for free as long as it pays.

Your heart and your head are always at odds,

The heart hates you, while your head thinks you’re god.

You are everything you hate about everyone else.

You are...

A scoundrel.

A jackal.

A joker.

A shrew.

That’s what they all had said about you.

The white knight.

The savior.

All chivalrous and new.

You had such high hopes that that’s what you could do,

But it turns out what they thought was true.

A poem with a strong story. Few people in charge of this world speak with a honest tongue. I like the repetition and strength of this poem. The ending was very good. The truth always come out in the end. A outstanding poem.
