Hinduism and the RecessionA Story by Dennis Shanaberga short journal from my Comparative Religion class
One of the primary principles of Hinduism states that “people are different.” This seemingly simple understanding of the way in which individuals exist is actually an extremely insightful glimpse at the human condition. They note that people grow and reach different stages of life at different points and can each follow even different paths along the way. This concept is something that a good deal of modern society seems to forget. While we often parade around happy slogans like “Be yourself,” it is rarely ever truly meant. Especially in America which is still reeling in the wake of the fleeing industrial factories, this is truly a detriment as well.
It appears that society, for the sake of keeping the people in a place where they would be willing to work the same job as everyone else in a factory or behind a desk, rid the individuals of their identity. Each person had to take the same path to reach happiness. And happiness of course was meant to be wealth or at least a fair amount of prosperity. Thus, each person was no longer different. This was instilled in people in school, where they had to memorize fact and not extrapolate meaning, and was enforced in their jobs and in the monotony of suburbia. The problem therein lies though, because America and most of the world powers are no longer industrial and the creative person needs to be found individually amongst the masses. It is this idea of Hinduism that would greatly lend itself to the current American recession, and would perhaps turn the country from the economic desolation it now faces. © 2010 Dennis ShanabergAuthor's Note
