Careers on ComputersA Poem by Dennis ShanabergThis is the future generation. Maybe even the current one. God help us.The computer screen is the friend to him.
Can’t remember where he’s been. His friends tell him that he’s got friends. But he has to hear it again and again. The couch is quiet. The cushions are broke. His skin is turning grey. The carpet’s stained. It’s color had turned. He’s wasted just another day. Careers on computers. Lives lived on screens. Careers on computers. Tell me what you’ve seen. You can fly to Rhode Island on the maps. You can watch daddy’s little girls dancing on men’s laps. You can shoot down a plane in World War II. You can chat in love with a girl, then tell her it’s through. Careers on computers. Dying offline. Careers on computers. Click. Download your mind. You can write out the report that you have to. You can watch daddy’s little girls instead, if you want to. You can make that music that you wanted to. You can chat in love with the girl instead, if it’s what you choose. Careers on computers. Browse internet. Careers on computers. Pictures that you sent. Click. Download. Daddy’s little girl. Click. And send. Hours that you’ve wasted. Click. Download. Private pictures of her. Click. And send. Cyber skippin’ bases. Careers on computers. Dying offline. Careers on computers. Click. Download your mind. Careers on computers. Dying offline. Careers on computers. Click.
