Hail MaryA Poem by Dennis ShanabergFrom Mexico
Her daddy worked so hard
Beneath the red light Of a hot sun. And he paid for the ride To give them their new home. On the country line Coyotes left dad behind. The little girl couldn’t cry With the dust dry in her eyes. Hail Mary From Mexico We don’t wanna see her go. Don’t go Don’t go No Mary From Mexico. Hail Mary Please don’t go. Now, she’s a working girl Beneath the neon lights Of a store front. A market with no roof. Before they pay, they want proof. Gettin’ tips from the guys Who’ve got no one at home. She finds the place That she finds herself in To be not much better Than where she’d been. Hail Mary From Mexico We don’t wanna see her go. Don’t go Don’t go No Mary From Mexico. Hail Mary Please don’t go. On the street corner, She is all alone. With a customer, She just wants to go. As the coyote’s howl And the Minutemen fire. Her affection has vanished From the men that would buy her. Hail Mary From Mexico We don’t wanna see her go. Don’t go Don’t go No Mary From Mexico. Hail Mary Please don’t go. © 2009 Dennis ShanabergAuthor's Note
