The Evolution to Be a Man

The Evolution to Be a Man

A Poem by Dennis Shanaberg
"

It takes some legs

"

Pip Pop Polliwog
Give yourself a name.
Pip Pop Polliwog
Come on, Play the game.
Stop and stare at me.
The Stalin’s midwife was insane.
Stop and care for me.
Maybe it’s her that we should blame.

One day, you’ll be a man
And hop to it with all grace.
One day, you’ll have a fam-
But not until you face
The wars and death
And crystal meth
All of it at eighteen
Not old enough to drink.

Pip Pop Polliwog
Crossing down below.
Pip Pop Polliwog
The shellback finds his home.
Stop and come along.
The current ever flows.
Stop and sing the song.
They sing “yo ho, yo ho
Oh-

One day, you’ll be a man
And hop to it with all grace.
One day, you’ll have a fam-
But not until you face
The wars and death
And crystal meth
All of it at eighteen
Not old enough to drink.”

You will grow up.
You will grow legs.
One day you will be a man.
You have swam here.
You can’t see shore.
And today, you can’t understand.
But trust me,
One day you will see.
And-

One day, you’ll be a man
And hop to it with all grace.
One day, you’ll have a fam-
But not until you face
The wars and death
And crystal meth
All of it at eighteen
Not old enough to drink.

A great lighthearted poem featuring a nice rhythm, great voice, and excellent choice of words!

Very well phrased and well written. It flowed excellently, and it's overall message is quite a great one.

I especially loved your use of repetition here. It was pulled off quite excellently, and to great effect.

I saw this to be lighthearted and a bit...cynical on how, once one turns eighteen you can do all this stuff yet one can still not have a drink. I liked this poem a lot.

A refreshing little write and great to see you exploring different styles...
This is important for growth and for finding where your writing is at. Without experimentation, you may not discover the depth of what you have to offer so keep changing at this stage of your development and you will soon find you can go places you hadn't thought of, if you'd stayed standing still. You will feel a little ping inside when something feels right and excites your imagination, so keep exploring.
The Pip Pop Polliwog is fun and light hearted and belongs in the world of nonsense but there are some challenging issues in the write so there is a gapping contrast between the two ends of the scale here. There is imagination at work and there is reality at work. So, the write is formed from a lighthearted point of view but in slips the cold reality. Do they belong in the same write is what I wonder. I want to know what fun you could have had with Pip Pop Polliwog if he hadn't been introduced to reality.
