Keeping Sight

Keeping Sight

A Poem by Dennis Shanaberg
"

Remember when reading this that hindsight is 20/20

"

I’ve had my eye on you.
And now I can’t see straight.
I didn’t know what to do,
I didn’t know how to wait.

But maybe I’ve grown.
Maybe I’ve changed.
If every second is arranged
At the beginning of time,
Then I guess as long as I’m by your side.
Whether or not
I hold your hand
I now understand
Is not all that matters.
As long as I can stay by your side.

With you my thoughts I can confide.
And now, and now I may decide
That friends are all we need.
If it’s all you want to see.
Because…
I’ve had my eye on you.
And now I can’t see straight.
I didn’t know what to do,
But, now I think I know how to wait.

Whether or not
I hold your hand
I now understand
Is not all that matters.
As long as I can stay by your side.

So, let’s all lift our voices to the sky.
Lift our voices to the air.
Now, lift your hands.
I’ll only hold them if you are scared.
Because…
Whether or not
I hold your hand
I now understand
Is not all that matters.
As long as I can stay by your side.

I don’t want to lose what he had.
Even before we had what I thought.
Losing a friend would make me so much more sad
Then losing the addendum that I sought.
