Kids

Kids

A Poem by Dennis Shanaberg
"

So, this is what I have to look forward to

"

There’s a baby in the back.
Crying her head off.
Crying his head off.
Crying it’s head off.
The baby makes a face.
It’s needing a changing.
It’s crying it’s head off.
Life’s ever changing.
Falls out of the crib.

Mmm…Remember please
Never have kids.
Mmm…Remind me please to
Never have kids.
I’ll ruin the world
If I ever have kids.
Look at them go.
Those’ll be my kids.

There is someone in the back.
She’s making a move now.
He’s making a move now.
They’re making a move now.
And now their hearts start to race.
Relationships changing.
Could I be his father?
Life’s ever changing.
Could I be her father?
Now, I’ve got a grandchild.
Look at the mad, mad globe.

Mmm…Remember please
Don’t ever have kids.
Mmm…Remind me please
Don’t ever have kids.
They’ll run the world
When we all go have kids.
Look at them smoke.
Stars behind their eyelids.

They’re in the fog in the back.
She’s smoking her mind ‘way.
He’s smoking his mind ‘way.
They’re smoking their mind ‘way.
They know their drugs are laced.
Now, their world is changing.
I tried to raise them with Jesus.
Life’s ever changing.
What have I done?

Finally, my life slows down.
My life winds down.
My world stops spinning round.
The kids are the future.
What have I done?
Why would I have brought them
Into this whole mess?
Only God could guess.

I like it, like a funny song, sad story.

I think this is a very good piece. It just gets me thinking about the ups and downs of having children. They are forever a handful, even when they move out and have children of their own, but they are also forever a blessing, a gift directly from God himself. The trick with them is to let them be them and try to lead them the right way. No matter what, though, it is hard t regret having them in the first place. I have never had kids of course, but I have helped raise three of my four younger siblings so I have a slight idea. Great job.
