Heroes vs. Heretics

Heroes vs. Heretics

A Poem by Dennis Shanaberg
"

Where have our heroes gone?

"

The red leader pulls out his gun.
The darkest knight must have lost someone.
The gold squadron goes up in flames.
And the once gentle wizard cries out in pain.

We are just heretics.
Where have our heroes gone?
Nothing more than heretics.
Where have our leaders gone?

There’s the courtroom king
Who is offering
Lifetime freedom for bribes.
Then the defrocked priest
Who steals money
And children in their prime.

They are just heretics.
Where have our heroes gone?
Nothing more than heretics.
Where have our leaders gone?

Mr. Bond’s in a bloodstained tuxedo.
And as for Mr. Blaine, where the hell did he go?
Are they just heretics?

Save the day.
Fly away.
It’s all gone today.
The heroes are tired.
The leaders souls are mired
With scandals and theocracy
With red greed and bureaucracy.

They are just heretics.
Where have our heroes gone?
Nothing more than heretics.
Where have our leaders gone?
We are just heretics.
Where have our heroes gone?
Nothing more than heretics.
Where have our leaders gone?

Save the day.
Fly away.
I want the good guys back today.

A fabulous search for some sort of moral order.
The writer laments the rise of the heretics and the fall of the hero. But wait....haven't there been many cases of the heretic turning into the hero at some stage, throughout history!
It's a good piece, thought provoking and brave. It is written through the eyes of youth, youth that has no realisation of process as that is something that is learned with the passing of years.
It is heartening to know that a young mind can see the decay and cry out about it. I see the writer standing in 'soap box corner' in London's Hyde park gesticulating with his hand, his finger extended as he implores the crowd to rise up above the mire that in intent on swallowing us under.
Well written and thank you for bringing reality to our attention.
