Devils in the Doorway

Devils in the Doorway

A Poem by Dennis Shanaberg
"

The people in the front lawn want to take me

"

I got devils in my doorway
I’ve got angels in my attic
I’ve got people in my front lawn
Waiting for the devil to move
So they can take me.

I got mama in the kitchen
I’ve got daddy sleeping in bed
I’ve got people in the front lawn
Happy that my daddy’s sleeping
So they can take me.

I don’t have money for their pockets.
I don’t have love for their blue veins.
I don’t have the look for their hunger.
I don’t have brains for their hardbacks.

They just want to see me suffer.
They only want to see me fall.
The devil doesn’t even want to see that trouble.
The angels are still hiding from it in the upstairs.
My mom’s too busy cooking breakfast.
My dad’s dreams are of his napping.
They all want to see me suffer.
They only want to see me fall.

I got devils in my doorway
I’ve got angels in my attic
I’ve got people in my front lawn
Waiting for the devil to move
So they can take me.

I got mama in the kitchen
I’ve got daddy sleeping in bed
I’ve got people in the front lawn
Happy that my daddy’s sleeping
So they can take me.

I know there’s no way past them.
I know I won’t see the light again.
I know now there’s got to be a way out.
I know someone would have to hear me shout.
I know somewhere beyond the sea
Someone is waiting just to kill me
To save me from this wicked world.
Please save me from this hard world.

wow, this is really good. combining one side of good then evil as well. true meaning and the situation with the parents working so much and forgetting about the kid. it's deep but good.

I think this might be one of my favorite pieces. The lines are so simple, yet each of them mean a lot. I like how you described how the parents are too busy with their own life to really care about the child, which is often he case in many homes. I really liked this. Great Job!

This is a great piece. Good depth with the forces of evil and good surrounding the subject and interestingly, there is another party waiting in the wings to cease control should either of the other two make that possible by faltering.
The parents, whom should be the ultimate protecters, seem idly distracted while the subject struggles.

However, despite the difficulties, there seems to be hope in the end and that comes by way of faith in finding a way out.

A good exploration of a tough subject. It shows understanding and insight. It shows hope and with hope, there is always joy to be found.

Another twisted tortured tale from this exploring writer. I feel he lives his life with a blindfold on at times. The other senses heightened as he assimilates his life through his other senses.
