The Jester and the Villain

The Jester and the Villain

A Poem by Dennis Shanaberg
"

A lesson in the duality of the human psyche: (man, that sounded smart)

"

Toss me a card.
I’ll turn it over.
I know what it will be .
It is never hard.
I’m always the wild card.

I am the jester.
I am the villain.
A bloody clown
A giggling Hannibal
Everyone is laughing at my expense.
Everyone will pay for it sixpence.

The jester meets Hester Prynne.
I am the original sin
That was followed by a lie.
Each lie is a joke
And each joke is a lie.
A joke has some truth that you couldn’t deny.
So, you tell it and tell it and tell-
Till liar, liar, liar in the fires of Hell.

I am the jester
I am the villain
Oh-fallen standup
Oh happy homicide
Everyone is laughing at my expense.
Everyone will pay for it sixpence.

I’ll take this moment to build some suspense.

The villain meets Dane’s Yorick.
I am already falling sick.
That is followed by my death
Because death is dust
And you know dust is dead
The dust is everyone’s eternal bed.
We go around and around and round-
But despite, in spite, with spite all our respites are below the ground.
