Consulatio

A Poem by Dennis Shanaberg
"

Questioning

"
Should tears have streamed down my face?
Or should the years have ebbed their flow?

What does it mean
When it’s over
And yet still it’s not?
What does it mean when you are happy,
But it still can’t be?
What does it mean for me?
For you?
For you and me?
Why don’t I let people see?
Why can’t they see the real me?

Is my heart still there?
Or has it been torn away?
Is it filled with darkness
Or is that just my excuse for the past-
For the wrongs I’ve made?

Should tears have streamed down my face?
Or should the years have ebbed their flow?

What does it mean
When it’s over
And yet still it’s not?
What does it mean when you are happy,
But it still can’t be?
What does it mean for me?
For you?
For you and me?
Why don’t I let people see?
Why can’t they see the real me?

Is my soul still there?
Or have I let it melt away?
Is it fully useless
For I have left beliefs on the wayside-
God falling in this cyclone.

What does it mean
When it’s over
And yet still it’s not?
What does it mean when you are happy,
But it still can’t be?
What does it mean for me?
For you?
For you and me?
Why don’t I let people see?
Why can’t they see the real me?
Is this the real me?
Is this the real me?
Am I real?

Should tears have streamed down my face?
Or should the years have ebbed their flow?

"Why don't I let people see? Why can't they see the real me?" I can so relate to these lines. I was very touched by them. The entire poem is well written and evokes quite a few emotions. I really enjoyed reading it a few times.

Heartfelt and Relatable!! I, once again, love the lyrical flow and aspect of the piece, as well as the meanings!!

I can honestly say, that I really know what you mean when you ask yourself those questions, I think you know that too. Again, I enjoy your repetition of the first two lines in the beginning and in the end. This poem kinda touched home with me...*sniffle* A really heart-felt write.
