Serendipitous Disaster

Serendipitous Disaster

A Poem by Dennis Shanaberg
"

Sometimes we look to love to change us, but perhaps it is that we need to change for love.

"

Hurt me.
Break me.
I don’t care.
You make me happy.
And this isn’t fair.
I want to be yours.
I’d love to be yours.
Please, just take me.
You can break me.
I’ve already got scars.
But none have been fatal
So far.

A darkened past.
An unseen present.
There’s miles ahead.
And decisions to resent.
I’m for the future.
But, tell me, what about her.
She’s driving me mad.
And it’s making me sad.

Hurt me.
Break me.
I don’t care.
You make me happy.
And this isn’t fair.
I want to be yours.
I’d love to be yours.
Please, just take me.
You can break me.
I’ve already got scars.
But none have been fatal
So far.

We have a past.
And it didn’t last.
Why should we let it
Decide how far that we get.
Please, don’t let fear win.
I think, Dear God, that that’s a sin.
Please, if we won’t be,
Let it be cuz of me.

Hurt me.
Break me.
I don’t care.
You make me happy.
And this isn’t fair.

I was going to put my rep behind me.
You were going to put behind the past boy.
I think that it could work, but you cannot see.
At least as I’m concerned, I’d have so much joy.
So, just forget the past.
Forget the future.
Let’s just go
Without being sure.

Hurt me.
Break me.
I don’t care.
You make me happy.
And this isn’t fair.
I want to be yours.
I’d love to be yours.
Please, just take me.
You can break me.
I’ve already got scars.
But none have been fatal
So far.

You know.
Forget even me for an moment.
Forget any message that I have sent.
Forget that I ever said that we should be.
Just decide what would make you happy.

Falling in love is easy. It's the staying in love that is the tricky part. Most people don't try anymore. This is a great poem in that confronts the pain of love, the paradox that love always presents: painful pleasure. And that can be interpreted in any way.
