A Few Words from My Dad

A Few Words from My Dad

A Poem by Dennis Shanaberg
"

He's a pretty cool dude sometimes

"

Today, my dad said something that struck a chord,
And he didn’t say it ‘cuz I asked him something.
No! he was simply thinking and said it of his own accord.
He said something about Hell and how we’re living,
And how the life that we’re living might be the Hell that we heard of.
Perhaps, one day, when we all die, if we do good things, and believe in God,
We end up in heaven, with angels smiling and playing harps,
But if we do wrong then we don’t get so far.

You see the words went like:
“Hell is something that we all fear.
We hear you get there by sex, murder, and drinking beer,
But a proposal says that this place is it-
That this is Hell and that life’s a b***h.
Maybe if you do good, God will let you in,
But the question lies what’s too much sin.”

Tomorrow, my mama’ll be watching shows on the screen,
And it always gets awkward when a commercial comes on
For phone sex or enhancement or something obscene,
But I guess some things out there are worth shelling out green.
My mama says they never had commercials like that growing up.
Perhaps, one day, when they all die, when we all get old, and climb o’er that hill,
Before we think of heaven, and ever dying, and children crying,
The entertainment then will make us start sighing.

We will think of words like:
Hell is something that we all feared.
We heard you got there by sex, murder, and drinking beer,
But what if we were wrong and this place is it-
That this is Hell and that life’s a b***h.
Maybe if we had done good, God would let us in,
But the question lies what was too much sin.

If he knew it was going to be so bad,
Why’d he make it all feel so good.

See life can’t be about missing out on the fun things,
Unless Hell is knowing what the good things bring.
I’m still convinced that here Satan looks like our savior,
And the other way around,
And that is why religion is quickly getting buried six feet down.
Belief is a burden, but without it you lose in the end,
But with it you lose now, and in the end you lose all your friends
Because they all did sin,
And their hellish offering,
Is to come back to earth,
And do it all again.

Oh wow. So many powerful lines in this poem, I can't choose just one to talk about. I love the chorus A LOT. Great great line. I love the messages that are in each verse, so amazing. I like how you talk about God in this, although almost "who the hell are you to tell me what to do" attitude, it was great to read.
