We Are the Future

We Are the Future

A Poem by Dennis Shanaberg

We are the future of America
Of the world.
So, mom and dad, don’t suppress me now.
We have to make it.
We will show you NOW!

Don’t you get it.
Parents, don’t you see?
That your teenage monstrosity
Is the very outcome of this very country.
Without him or her, you can’t go on.
You prob’ly just told them to turn off this song.
But kids, don’t.

We are the future of America
Of the world.
So, mom and dad, don’t suppress me now.
We have to make it.
We will show you how.

We can’t take it.
Not yet, can’t you see?
Over nothing, do not chew us out.
All the trivial things don’t call for you to shout.
I will just have to say bluntly,
“When you’re old in forty years, where ya’ want to be?”

We are the future of America
Of the world.
So, mom and dad, don’t suppress me now.
We have to make it.
We will show you NOW!

I don’t want this coming out wrong,
Like we don’t appreciate you.
Actually, that’s why I wrote this song.
‘Cuz we do appreciate you.
We just need you to give us a few rights,
So we can prepare for fighting the good fights.

Nice Nice. Bravo!

We can't take it.
Not yet, can't you see?
Over nothing, do not chew us out.
All the trivial things don't call for you to shout.
I will just have to say bluntly,
"When you're old in forty years, where ya' want to be?"

I love that verse so much. Well stated and really passionate!
