The Constant

The Constant

A Poem by Dennis Shanaberg
"

(kon-stuhnt) n. something that is unchanging or invariable (1350-1400: (s. of constāns, prp. of constāre to stand firm))

"

Moving forward and backward
Making love with time in time.
The world moves forward
While I am left behind.
Friends find futures.
Friends find new lives in time.
I am just sitting here.
My head’s trapped inside my mind.

Who’s gonna be my constant?
Who’s gonna be there
When I’ve lost my head?
What’s gonna be the constant?
What’ll keep my body from pieces
When my head thinks that I am dead?

Today, last night, are one in my mind.
The sleep never does quite coincide.
This sick, this pain, might drive me insane.
If not, then it’ll be the friends so soon my bane.

Who’s gonna be my constant?
Who’s gonna be there
When I’ve lost my head?
What’s gonna be the constant?
What’ll keep my body from pieces
When my head thinks that I am dead?

You’ll all find love
While I will still just be sitting here.
You’ll all find life
And I will still just be sitting here.
You all are gone.
And I am here.
You swing forward on second hands.
And each future minute I’ve come to fear.

Who’s gonna be my constant?
Who’s gonna be there
When I’ve lost my head?
What’s gonna be the constant?
What’ll keep my body from pieces
When my head thinks that I am dead?

I like the rhyme scheme in this...it is different but done very well. I like the second to last stanza, because to me that has the most emotion put into it. It felt like you were yelling that at someone who wasn't going to listen to you. I think we all ask ourselves that question, many many times. It is wonderful that you put your feelings into words, because it produced something wonderful =]

Not all who wonder are lost...Lord of the Rings
You poem.. makes me think of all the others I have read..there is always a journey.and finding a constant is ellusive to all..but finding a place to rest in love.. are someone to journey with sounds good..
the poem captures the feeling of want.
