Like You Were Next to Me

Like You Were Next to Me

A Poem by Dennis Shanaberg

Never have I felt your loving embrace
At the break of day.
Never have we kissed endlessly
In the pouring rain.
But I still remember that night
When we held hands beneath the stars.
Laying, staring at the sky.
Walking, getting nowhere far.

And now…
Dying is not having you in my arms
(I’m dying without having you in my arms.)
You relieved every bit of my doubt.
It’s because of you that I know love is real.
(Everything we ever had was real.)
I wish I could let this love out.

There were those nights when I’d lay sleeplessly
Feeling all alone.
I’d hear your familiar ring
On the telephone.
And we’d talk until the sun rose.
Of life, love, and family.
About anything we chose.
It felt like you were next to me.

Now…
Dying is not having you in my arms
(I’m dying without having you in my arms.)
You relieved every bit of my doubt.
It’s because of you that I know love is real.
(Everything we ever had was real.)
I wish I could let this love out.

But I still remember that night
When we held hands beneath the stars.
Laying, staring at the sky.
Walking, getting nowhere far.
