Malevolent Metamorphosis

Malevolent Metamorphosis

A Poem by Dennis Shanaberg

Crucify me in this chrysalis.
I never want to come back again.
I've been reborn and never better.
I would rather I just stay dead.

We all have different versions
Of who we think we are.
That's never what the world sees.
They only look from afar.

I've been tested.
I've only failed.
I am bested.
My faith has paled.

And now I'm see through -
A sorry someone,
Or a lack there of.
The shadows bleed through
Till there's no one
At all because...

I try and try
To find myself,
But I never like who is there.
I cry and cry
Till drowned in pools.
Reflections have me ensnared.

Narcissistic silhouette -
He's ego without form.
Pessimistic pirouettes -
He sways in silent scorn.

The cocoon is slowly cracking.
I fear what might emerge.
The creature's been ever lacking.
Shall it be with each rebirth?
